Title: Open Rank Nursing Faculty Position (Tenure Track or Contract):
Medical Surgical Nursing
Supervisor: Pre-Licensure Nursing Program Director

This is a full-time, 10-month, tenure-track OR contract faculty position within the School of Nursing’s pre-licensure programs.

Position Overview

Location:

Boston-based. This role reports to the Pre-Licensure Nursing Program Administrator. Contract faculty are expected to teach seven courses per year or the approved equivalent; tenure-track faculty are expected to teach six courses per year or the approved equivalent. Junior tenure-track faculty may receive course release time to focus on scholarship during the first five years, planned with the Pre-Licensure Nursing Program Director.

Faculty are expected to adhere to Simmons policies and participate in ongoing scholarship and teaching activities.

Responsibilities

Teaching Responsibilities

  • Teaching is a primary responsibility with an annual teaching load: seven courses for contract faculty and six courses for tenure-track faculty. Courses include, but are not limited to, Medical-Surgical Nursing;
    Fundamentals of Nursing;
    Complex Care Nursing;
    Synthesis;
    Transitions to Professional Nursing; and PLAN (Purpose, Leadership and Action) courses, as applicable.
  • The faculty’s responsibilities also include: demonstrating commitment to continuous improvement in teaching skills, pedagogy, and inclusion in the classroom; providing student support through office hours and other means to ensure a positive educational experience; eliciting, supporting, and implementing curricula to achieve course and program objectives; and evaluating student achievement of expected learning outcomes.
Service Responsibilities

The faculty member is expected to provide service to the University and contribute to its mission.

Responsibilities include:

  • Advising pre-licensure students
  • Participating in curriculum development and maintenance as a team member
  • Participating in program, department, school, and university meetings, committees, and activities
  • Participating in faculty governance and program evaluation
  • Membership on school and university committees
Scholarly Responsibilities for Tenure-Track Roles

Tenure-track faculty are expected to engage in scholarship and to:

  • Conduct and publish scholarly research that advances the nursing profession and the School of Nursing's mission
  • Participate in professional development to stay current in the discipline
  • Maintain certifications and licensure, if applicable
  • Maintain involvement in the broader academic and professional community according to disciplinary standards
  • Participate in other scholarly activities that foster professional development and support the School of Nursing's mission
  • Grant writing is encouraged and supported, but not required
Professional Engagement Responsibilities for Contract Roles

All contract faculty are expected to maintain currency in their discipline and licensure as required, including:

  • Participating in professional development to remain relevant in the discipline
  • Maintaining certifications and licensure as applicable
  • Maintaining involvement in the broader academic and professional community according to disciplinary standards
