The Energy Systems Group is part of the Homeland Protection Division and focuses on assisting the Department of Homeland Security in securing the nation from energy‑related threats. Our group works on a wide variety of programs including domestic and tactical military base energy resilience, microgrids—energy systems that can operate independently from the bulk electric grid, cyber security of control systems that interface with energy systems, and development of advanced energy technologies.

The group leads systems analysis efforts focusing on the gaps between infrastructure and operational requirements, executes live exercises for testing energy and cyber resilience posture, builds hardware‑in‑the‑loop and real‑time simulation platforms, does basic and applied research on technologies, and fields functional prototypes. Projects are typically conducted in a small team environment, leveraging expertise from within Lincoln Laboratory and MIT campus to successfully execute nationally important and cutting‑edge efforts.

Job Description

Our group is seeking highly motivated power systems and power electronics engineers who are interested in solving challenging technical problems. Typical activities include energy systems modelling, data analysis, algorithm development, hardware prototyping, and supporting demonstration, testing and evaluation activities. We seek a candidate who will be flexible and proactive in developing/implementing leading‑edge techniques for processing and analysis of varied data sets, and working to develop new concepts, designs, and systems as program needs dictate.

Required

M.S. or B.S./B.A. with 3 years of direct experience, in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or related field with a strong background in physical sciences.

  • Experience in power systems and/or power electronics
  • Experience with one or more power modelling tools, such as OpenDSS, SKM, ETAP, PSCAD, Typhoon-HIL Easy Power, Spice circuit modelling, or their equivalent
  • Proficiency in a high‑level programming language such as Python, MATLAB/Simulink
  • Hands‑on lab experience with hardware: high power measurement and data collection, circuit design, PCB layout/rework, soldering, utilizing test equipment in a lab to test and debug (electronic loads, power supplies, oscilloscopes, signal generators)
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • A minimum GPA of 3.5
Desired Skills
  • Experience in power circuit modelling, power converter design and controls, battery selection, system integration, and testing, real‑time simulations with inverter‑based resources (BESS, PV) within microgrids

Recent Graduate Hiring Range: $116,400 – $140,000

Experienced Hiring Range: $116,400 – $182,200
