Medical Assistant – Family Medicine

Department: 01120 WFBMG Wake Forest Health Network:
Lexington – Family Medicine

Status: Full Time

Hours per Week: 40 (Monday to Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm)

Pay Range: $21.45 – $32.20

Major Responsibilities
  • Prepares and rooms the patient for exam by obtaining vital signs and gathering, documenting, and updating pertinent health information (e.g., chief complaint, allergies, medications). Monitors and completes Clinical Integration/Quality Improvement measures with notification to clinician for opportunities within scope.
  • Performs laboratory procedures (e.g., strep test, wound culture, specimen collection) using principles of aseptic technique and standard precautions.
  • Assists the Physician or Advanced Practice Professional with procedures such as pelvic exams, allergy scratch testing, EMG, cautery, colposcopy.
  • Administers routine medications under Physician or APP orders or approved standing orders, which may include immunizations, antibiotics, vitamins, topical agents.
  • Follows up with necessary procedure or test requests, pre-approved care algorithms, new appointment times, and referrals. Refers questions to Registered Nurses and Physician/APC per scope guidelines and relays information back to patient.
  • Communicates with Physician/APP and other team members to ensure smooth clinic flow, adjusting as necessary, and communicates accurate timely information to the patient.
  • May perform basic and advanced clinical support tasks or skills based on specialty and competencies, such as removal of sutures and staples, laboratory procedures (throat/nose culture, drug screen), phlebotomy, EKG, spirometry, Holter monitor, prescription refills using protocols under supervision.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide age‑appropriate care, and interpret data to identify each patient’s needs.
Licensure, Registration, and Certification
  • BLS for Healthcare Providers (American Heart Association) required
  • Current Medical Assistant certification from one of: CMA (AAMA), CCMA (NHA), NCMA (NCCT), RMA (AMT), RMA (American Allied Health), NCMSMA (NHCWA), NRCMA (NAHP), NRMA (NRMA)
Education
  • High School Diploma or GED;
    Associate’s Degree in Medical Assisting preferred.
  • Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program.
Experience
  • 1 year experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Perform routine and complex technical skills within scope after competency demonstration.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; rapport with patients, team, physicians.
  • Proficient computer skills; navigation within Windows OS, EMR, email.
  • Customer service skills to support positive patient experience.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Must sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, crawl, kneel, climb, reach.
  • Lift up to 35 lbs without assistance; heavier patient lifts require equipment and support.
  • Must have functional speech, vision, hearing, and touch with fine-hand manipulation abilities.
  • Exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical, blood and body fluids hazards; protective clothing required.
  • Operate equipment necessary to perform duties.
