Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Director of Nursing, the Surgical Technologist/Surgical Assistant scrubs for surgical procedures and demonstrates competence while functioning as a member of the surgical team. Prepares and maintains supplies, instruments and equipment related to these procedures. First assists under direct supervision of the attending surgeon and provides perioperative care to assigned patients and surgical procedures. Works as team member in the operating room to provide effective patient care.
Supports the philosophy, objectives and goals of the Surgery Center. Supports and participates in quality improvement activities.
- Requires six to eighteen months of college or trade technical school and completion of course for surgical technicians. An additional one year course and graduation from Surgical Assistant Training Program and successful passing of certification is required. Must maintain appropriate surgical assistant licensure for Kentucky.
- CPR certification within probationary period.
- Reads, writes, speaks, and comprehends the English language.
Physical guidelines include the ability to move, traverse, position self, remain in a stationary position and negotiate steps for up to eight hours per day; light lifting, pulling or pushing of carts, equipment, etc. Must be able to lift heavy objects up to 50 pounds, push and/or pull patients or equipment up to 100 pounds. Must be able to bend body downward at the waist;
be able to kneel. Must have visual acuity at least 20 inches or less. Must be able to identify and distinguish colors. Must have ability to coordinate eyes and hands quickly and accurately. Must have ability to manipulate small objects quickly and accurately. Must be able to work with hands in turning and placing objects in space. Must be able to perceive objects accurately as to size, temperature and texture.
Must have auditory acuity. Must be able to stand for long periods of time. Mental and physical health sufficient to meet the demands of the position.
