Estimator, Electrical Engineering, Quantity Surveyor, Procurement / Purchasing
The Preconstruction Specialist supports the planning and development of large-scale commercial and industrial electrical projects, including power distribution and low voltage systems, from early design through turnover to operations. Reporting to the Director of Preconstruction and working closely with the Director of Estimating, the estimating team, BIM/VDC, Operations, and project partners, this role helps evaluate design, scope, constructability, cost, schedule, procurement, and execution strategy.
The position also supports estimating accuracy and consistency, identifies project risks and opportunities early, and helps ensure decisions made during preconstruction are effectively carried into project execution. This role does not have direct management authority over the estimating team.
- Evaluate design documents for constructability, installation efficiency, prefabrication opportunities, labor impacts, and potential cost or schedule risks
- Compare design documents across milestones (SD, DD, CD) to identify scope, cost, and schedule changes, and ensure decisions carry forward accurately
- Identify and communicate scope gaps, design risks, procurement risks, and assumptions that could materially impact cost or execution
- Attend design review meetings with architects, engineers, and general contractors to provide electrical trade and constructability input
- Coordinate with the Director of Estimating and the estimating team on all preconstruction pursuits, helping ensure takeoff procedures and cost estimates are accurate, consistent, and aligned with project requirements
- Support estimating quality and consistency on preconstruction pursuits, including periodic review and audit of takeoffs, quantity surveys, and estimating standards
- Review and audit takeoffs and quantity surveys prepared by estimators prior to bid submission
- Ensure takeoffs completed in Accubid Anywhere and Bluebeam, follow consistent standards and are accurate before bid submission
- Maintain historical cost data and unit pricing for future bids
- As needed, support the project management team in preparing and pricing change orders during construction, applying consistent takeoff and estimating standards to keep scope and cost documentation accurate
- Assemble bid packages, scope letters, and inclusion/exclusion lists
- Support proposal development, GMP pricing, and value engineering options
- Track bid schedules and ensure estimates are submitted on time
- Participate in bid reviews with the estimating and operations teams
- Coordinate with project managers, estimators, and field supervisors to align preconstruction plans with execution
- Partner with BIM/VDC teams to determine which electrical systems and assemblies should be modeled, prefabricated, or pre-planned ahead of turnover to Operations
- Communicate with general contractors and owners on scope clarifications and preconstruction RFIs
- Identify long-lead materials and support early procurement planning
- Lead the turnover of preconstruction outcomes to Operations, ensuring assumptions, scope decisions, value engineering items, procurement concerns, and estimating strategy are clearly documented and carried into project execution
- Track preconstruction budgets and monitor cost trends
- Contribute to preliminary schedules with input on electrical sequencing
- Identify value engineering and cost-saving opportunities
- Conduct site walks/assessments during preconstruction
- Stay current on NEC code requirements, material pricing, and industry trends for both power distribution and low voltage systems
- 3-5+ years of electrical estimating experience required
- Demonstrated experience estimating or supporting preconstruction for large, complex electrical projects, preferably $10M+ in value
- Proficiency with Accubid Anywhere and Bluebeam Revu not required, but considered a plus
- Electrician or field experience not required, but considered a plus
- Strong working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and electrical construction methods
- Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across estimating, design, BIM/VDC, operations teams, clients and general contractors
