Position Overview
The Director of Resident Life and Assistant Dean of Students is a full-time professional staff member reporting directly to the Dean of Students. The position engages in short- and long-range planning around effective and efficient operations and supervises the Resident Life staff and operation. The individual filling this position is expected to know, understand, adhere to, and uphold all College policies and procedures and ensure that staff in areas of responsibility comply with College policy while also maintaining lofty expectations around the student experience, customer service, and building a culture of community and engagement.
Dutiesand Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively with campus departments to improve the student and residential experience through programming, student services, safety initiatives, and residential facilities management that enhance student retention and success.
- Oversees, evaluates, and assesses the residential facilities with the department of facilities, including communicating regularly with the Director of Facilities to monitor residence hall maintenance, housing facilities improvements and deferred maintenance, and housekeeping needs. Consults campus safety, facilities management, and dining services to address safety, facility, and meal plan issues.
- Supervises the Campus Housing Specialist who manages administrative campus housing-related tasks including room and meal plan assignments, changes and appeals, accommodations, requests, and communications to internal and external stakeholders concerning these areas.
- With the Campus Housing Specialist, manages housing occupancy and roommate issues/conflicts that exceed the RA role.
- Through the RA staff, oversees residential student involvement and engagement through community programming. Also provides leadership to the orientation of new residential students and re-education returning students.
- Provides leadership to the Cardinal Care Team that supports students and retention efforts through the various departments providing student support services.
- Responsible for meeting College goals related to fiscal oversight for areas of responsibility.
- Participates with the Dean of Students in student conduct matters and is a trained Title IX investigator.
- Active participant in and provides leadership to ad hoc Student Life and campus leadership teams and college committees, as assigned.
- Manages communications with students, parents, and constituents around areas of responsibility.
Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s preferred. Three or more years of related experience preferred. Requires superior organizational skills and verbal communication skills, staff training, student and parent contact, and public speaking; writing skills needed to maintain policies, programs, and procedures for the departments as well as for all written material representing the College’s orientation programs and multicultural website. Also requires ability to analyze emergency situations and make decisions quickly.
Basic computer skills required to prepare written materials and work with the College’s recruitment database/software.
Office work in a fast-paced environment with college students. Position entails possible extended hours during academic year as incumbent is “on-call” to respond to student, parent(s), and staff needs/emergencies. Position requires work on occasional evenings and weekends.
Supervisory ResponsibilitiesCandidate must have proven experience of understanding of supervisory responsibilities and provide coaching and mentoring to entry-level professionals and student staff.
