Title:

Special Education Teacher Assistant

Hourly Rate: $17/hour

Qualifications:
  • Must meet requirements for paraprofessionals set by the Illinois State Board of Education.
  • Training and/or experience working with students with disabilities preferred.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and communicate effectively and fluently in English.
  • Competent in utilizing a computer to communicate via email and in using an office productivity suite like Microsoft Office (including Word) or Google Apps for Education.
  • Demonstrated compassion, patience, and teamwork.
  • Physical Requirements:
  • Standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, pushing, and pulling are required.
  • Must have the ability to lift and move 60 lbs.
  • Reports To:

    Building Administrator(s);
    Teachers will provide guidance.

    Job Goals:
    • Assist the teacher and students in achieving educational goals.
    • Support students in various settings within the school and on field trips.
    • Help students with a wide range of disabilities participate in classes and activities with peers.
    Performance Responsibilities /

    Essential Functions:
  • Report to work on time and demonstrate reliable attendance.
  • Read and respond to district/building communications promptly.
  • Apply knowledge of practices, methods, and techniques used in teaching special education populations.
  • Work with individual students or small groups to support classroom lessons as directed.
  • Provide appropriate modifications and accommodations based on Individual Education Plans.
  • Guide independent, enrichment, and remedial work.
  • Assist in monitoring student behavior and academic progress.
  • Operate adaptive equipment and assist with mobility needs, including transportation and personal care tasks.
  • Supervise students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips.
  • Support classroom instruction, prepare materials, and foster a positive environment.
  • Assist in implementing Individualized Education Plans and communicate student concerns promptly.
  • Collaborate weekly with teachers to discuss duties.
  • Help students with clothing, lunch, snacks, and cleanup routines.
  • Organize and maintain student records and serve as a resource for substitute teachers.
  • Maintain ethical behavior and confidentiality.
  • Manage time and student schedules effectively.
  • Follow health, safety, and risk management policies.
  • Model positive behavior for students.
  • Participate in professional development and complete required trainings.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
