Report & Primary Function

Reports To: Director of Athletics and Activities

Primary Function: To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary to realize individual and team success. The student shall receive instruction to formulate moral values, pride of accomplishment, acceptable social behavior, self‑discipline, and self‑confidence.

Qualifications
  • Has a valid Illinois teacher certification.
  • Employed as teacher or substitute teacher in District 187.
  • Previous coaching experience in assigned sports is desirable.
  • Substantial knowledge of the sport’s technical aspects and ongoing study of new theories and procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of all athletic policies approved by District 187 Board of Education and responsible for implementation.
  • Knowledge of state, league, and NFHS, IHSA regulations; consistent implementation.
  • Understanding of administrative line of command; refers all student and parent requests or grievances to the Director of Athletics and Activities.
Essential Performance Responsibilities
  • Establish foundational philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff.
  • Design conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of the overall program.
  • Train and inform staff, encouraging professional growth through clinic attendance per local policy.
  • Delegate duties, supervise implementation, analyze staff effectiveness at season end, evaluate all assistants.
  • Maintain discipline, address grievances, and increase morale and cooperation.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Coordinator of Athletics/Activities or Principal.
Administrative Duties
  • Advise, coordinate, and support high‑school and middle‑school coaches with the Director of Athletics and Activities and applicable Principal.
  • Assist the Director with scheduling and transportation to tournaments and special events.
  • Prepare scheduled events or practices, adhere to facility times, coordinate with maintenance and school employees.
  • Provide documentation for state and system requirements concerning physical examination, parental consent, and eligibility.
  • Maintain safeguards for equipment sites.
  • Provide training rules and unique sports regulations to each participating athlete.
  • Present at all practices, games, and travel; provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards for participants.
  • Direct student managers and statisticians.
  • Determine discipline and enforce due‑process procedures; contact parents when a student is dropped or ineligible.
  • Adhere to NFHS, IHSA, and School Board policy for coach conduct, certifications, and protocols.
Equipment and Facility Responsibilities
  • Collect cost for lost or unreturned equipment.
  • Issue and store equipment; submit annual inventory and current records to Director.
  • Recommend budgetary items for next year to the Director.
  • Monitor equipment rooms and coaches’ offices; authorize access.
  • Permit athletes to enter only authorized areas of the building at appropriate times.
  • Examine locker rooms before and after practices and games; monitor cleanliness and maintenance of specific sports equipment.
  • Instill respect for equipment and school property in players, emphasizing care and proper use.
Program Responsibilities
  • Assist the Director with responsibilities.
  • Make press releases and school announcements.
  • Inform team members of rule changes and teach fundamentals per the Director’s framework.
  • Maintain records of team statistics and lettering requirements.
  • Attend required meetings (staff, conference, IHSA, etc.) and carry out scouting assignments.
  • Arrive early before practices, contests, and meetings; remain afterward to help players and staff as needed.
  • Assist in implementing in‑season and out‑of‑season conditioning and weight programs.
  • Refrain from criticizing, admonishing, or arguing in front of players or parents about Director or staff.
  • Strive to improve skills via clinic attendance and use of available resources.
