Overview
This job description outlines the responsibilities, qualifications, and working conditions for a Registered Respiratory Therapist. The Respiratory Care Practitioner provides respiratory care through patient assessment, planning, intervention, education, and evaluation, and performs all respiratory care procedures within the scope of license. It includes monitoring patient responses to therapies and adjusting as needed.
Note: This is a full-time night shift position.
Responsibilities- In collaboration with the interdisciplinary care team, conduct initial and ongoing patient assessments, analyze data, create a plan of care, implement treatment, and evaluate effectiveness.
- Perform treatments and therapies according to physician orders; explain therapy goals to patients and modify procedures based on patient response; set up and maintain therapy modes; determine appropriateness of prescribed therapy and recommend methods to achieve goals.
- Maintain proper documentation, patient medical charts, and recordkeeping; adhere to policies, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
- Provide patient education on cardiopulmonary diseases and treatment options; instruct patients and caregivers in incentive spirometry, MDI administration, oxygen therapy, home aerosol therapy, or ventilator care as applicable.
- Set up and maintain respiratory therapy equipment and supplies.
- May serve as a preceptor to new team members and/or students.
- Respond to cardio-pulmonary resuscitations and actively participate as needed.
- Current Respiratory Care License in the state of practice (required)
- National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) credentialed (required)
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) (preferred)
- BLS; ACLS and PALS (preferred at hire; must obtain from approved source prior to direct patient care)
- Valid driver’s license (required for Home Care/DME)
- Bachelor's Degree in a related field (preferred)
- Previous experience in an ambulatory or acute care setting (preferred)
- 6 months Respiratory Therapy experience in a general care area (preferred)
- EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) training (preferred)

- Exposure to moving mechanical parts, dust/fumes, electrical energy, x-ray/electromagnetic energy, high pitched noises
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work with diverse populations
- Ability to gather and interpret data; good organization and time management; accountability
- Knowledge of non-invasive respiratory therapy equipment (oximeters, end-tidal CO2 analyzers)
- Therapeutic procedures include CPAP/BiPAP, jet aerosol, oxygen therapy, incentive spirometry, chest physiotherapy, pulse oximetry, high-flow oxygen, continuous aerosols, ventilator management, diagnostic testing
- Understanding of EKGs, electronic monitoring, lead placement, and basic arrhythmias; arterial blood gas punctures and testing; bedside pulmonary function; patient assessment and education; chest suction equipment; chest X-ray interpretation
