About the Role
The Project Manager at Smith-Boughan Mechanical plays a critical role in managing commercial HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical projects from pre-construction through closeout. This position oversees scheduling, budgeting, procurement, and subcontractor coordination while ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and in compliance with scope and safety standards.
In this role, the Project Manager will have the opportunity to:
- Lead diverse mechanical and plumbing projects
- Work collaboratively with clients, engineers, field personnel, and contractors
- Influence project outcomes through proactive planning and execution
- Potentially mentor and support junior staff while fostering a culture of quality and safety

Key Responsibilities
Project Management & Execution – 45%
- Lead HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical projects from kickoff through completion
- Ensure project performance aligns with contractual terms, code, and customer standards
Client & Contractor Relations – 20%
- Serve as the main liaison between Smith-Boughan and clients, engineers, or GCs
- Lead project meetings, deliver progress updates, and resolve conflicts diplomatically
- Ensure client satisfaction and communication transparency throughout the project lifecycle
- Develop new business opportunities relative to a particular client, market segment, or geographical area.
- Monitor budgets, job costs, and margin performance
- Manage and review change orders, invoices, and cost projections
- Maintain accurate forecasting and profit reporting
Field Coordination & Quality Assurance – 15%
- Perform routine job site visits to review progress, enforce safety, and verify quality
- Work closely with foremen and field teams to resolve issues quickly and effectively
- Implement project-specific quality control procedures
Measures of Performance (KPI’s)
The following objective measures of performance will be a significantly weighted component of the annual performance review for this position:
- Safety Performance associated with assigned projects.
- Gross Margin contribution of assigned projects.

The ideal candidate brings strong scheduling, budgeting, and coordination skills, and is committed to delivering high-quality work while maintaining excellent client relationships. They thrive in fast-paced environments and take pride in producing technically sound, professionally executed projects.
Minimum Qualifications
- Four year construction management degree or equivalent
- 5+ years of Project Management experience in commercial plumbing and/or HVAC
- Knowledge of Ohio’s construction market with experience in healthcare, institutional, or government facilities
- Supervisory/Project Management training and/or PMP certification
- Proficiency with estimating software (Trimble “Auto Bid”), project scheduling, and document management systems (Plan Grid, Project Docs, etc.).
- Strong skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Ability to interpret drawings, project specs, and mechanical system requirements
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to job sites throughout West Central/Northwest Ohio
Preferred Qualifications
- 7+ years in HVAC/mechanical project management with a focus on large-scale commercial projects
- Expertise in HVAC systems, controls, plumbing, and piping coordination
- Proven ability to manage high-value jobs with multiple subcontractors
- Excellent negotiation, client-facing, and team leadership abilities

- Starting at $82K/year (with the required PM Level II qualifications, but it may be higher depending on practical experience as well as the number and type of certifications, etc.)
