The Police Officer provides internal and external safety/police functions to support the general safety of the hospital community. Main duties include participation in investigations and arrests when warranted, patrol of assigned areas and campus property (including parking), responding to radio and telephone calls for routine or emergency assistance, and serving as a first responder to fire alarms, chemical spills, Code Blue, and Rapid Responses in public areas.
Essential Job Functions
- Assigned patrol within facilities and campus property; maintain a police presence and remain alert for criminal activity or assistance needs.
- Assist stranded motorists with minor automobile problems and provide aid to visitors as needed.
- Respond to calls for assistance and emergencies; exercise sound judgement and quick thinking in dangerous situations.
- Assist medical staff in restraining patients as necessary; perform BLS when required.
- Conduct preliminary investigations in hospital‑related incidents involving visitors and patients.
- Work closely with local law enforcement agencies and maintain accurate daily activity reports.
- Report all unusual incidents and criminal activity on incident reports; file reports on vehicular accidents, criminal offenses, and suspicious activity on hospital property.
- Maintain the facility’s lost and found; secure valuable property and, if required, transport money to and from the designated bank.
- Handle morgue pickups and release to funeral homes and the coroner; assist with air ambulance landings.
- Monitor and review security cameras and alarms.
- Perform other duties assigned by the Chief of Police.
Required Minimum Education
- High School Diploma or GED
Preferred Education
- 2‑Year/Associate’s Degree
Licensure/Certification Required
- Current OPOTA Certificate, BLS, NAPPI training within first 6 months of hire
Minimum Years and Type of Experience
- 1–3 Years of experience preferred
Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
- Firearm qualifications: successfully pass bi‑annual firearms qualifications.
- Meeting minimum physical fitness standards based on the Cooper Institute’s fitness norms for law enforcement at 60% standard.
- Computer skills:
Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); typing minimum 40 WPM.
