Professional Duties
  • Exercise general professional duties as circumstances require:
    • If employed as a teacher in a school under the reasonable direction of the principal of that school;
    • If employed by a board on terms under which the teacher is not assigned to any one school, under the reasonable direction of that board and of the principal of any school in which the teacher may be required to work.
  • Exercise particular duties:
    • A teacher employed by a school shall perform any particular duties reasonably assigned by the principal.
    • A teacher referred to in paragraph 1(b) shall perform any particular duties reasonably assigned by the board or the principal of any school where the teacher may be required to work.
  • Planning and preparing courses and lessons.
  • Teaching, including setting and marking work for pupils.
  • Assessing, recording, and reporting on pupil development, progress and attainment.
  • Promoting the general progress and well‑being of pupils.
  • Providing advice and guidance to pupils on educational, social, further education and career matters.
  • Making records of and reports on the personal and social needs of pupils.
  • Communicating and consulting with parents.
  • Co‐operating with approved external persons or bodies.
  • Participating in meetings related to the purposes described above.
  • Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references.
  • Participating in staff development schemes and performance reviews.
  • Reviewing teaching methods and the programme of work.
  • Participating in further training and professional development arrangements.
  • Advising and cooperating with the Principal and other teachers on curriculum, teaching materials, programmes, methods, assessment and pastoral arrangements.
  • Maintaining good order and discipline among pupils; safeguarding health and safety.
  • Participating in curriculum meetings and administrative or organisational meetings.
  • Preparing pupils for public examinations and assessing pupils for such examinations; recording and reporting such assessments; supervising pupils during examinations.
  • Contributing to the selection, induction and assessment of probationary teachers; coordinating or managing other teachers; supporting curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions.
  • Participating in administrative work, including supervision of support staff and ordering of equipment and materials.
  • Attending assemblies; registering pupils’ attendance; supervising pupils.
Personnel Requirements (Person Specification)

Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up the post.

Essential Criteria
  • Hold a teaching qualification recognised for grant‑aided schools in Northern Ireland.
  • Minimum of 6 months demonstrable experience using effective classroom strategies to support and challenge children and young people of all abilities, including those with SLD, MLD and ASD.
  • Experience working with professionals to meet the needs of children and young people with Special Educational Needs.
  • Experience or ongoing professional development in using specialist equipment and skills for children with Special Educational Needs.
  • Knowledge of the Northern Ireland Curriculum, Safeguarding and Child Protection policy, SEND Code of Practice, assessment methods for SEN, restorative practice, information technology systems and digital classroom tools.
  • Effective teaching and classroom management skills; proven ability to provide a supportive, inclusive environment; initiative, problem‑solving, flexibility; professional competence; collaborative skills; teamwork; and motivation.
  • Evidence of alignment with the school’s values and ethos.
Desirable Criteria
  • Minimum of 12 months paid experience using effective classroom approaches to support and challenge children and young people with SEN.
