Position Summary

The Service Line Manager for Surgical Oncology is responsible for the daily clinical and operational management of the Surgical Oncology service line within the Morris Cancer Center Operating Rooms. This leader serves as the central liaison between surgeons, anesthesiologists, nursing, and support teams to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality surgical care for oncology patients. The SLM plays a critical role in maintaining clinical excellence, optimizing throughput, and ensuring that workflows and resources align with institutional standards and the strategic goals of RWJ University Hospital and the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.

Functions
  • Clinical & Operational Leadership:
    • Oversees daily surgical oncology case flow, collaborating with anesthesia, surgical teams, and perioperative leadership to ensure smooth operations.
    • Maintains clinical expertise and demonstrates leadership presence within the operating room environment.
    • Ensures delivery of safe, effective, and compassionate care consistent with RWJUH and AORN standards.
    • Monitors room readiness, equipment availability, and case preparedness to support timely starts and efficient turnover.
    • Serves as point of contact and traffic control for real‑time clinical decision‑making in Surgical Oncology cases.
  • Human Resources & Financial Management:
    • Participates in interviewing, hiring, and onboarding new team members in collaboration with the OR Director and Assistant Director.
    • Mentors and supports professional development of nursing and technical staff within the service line.
    • Conducts performance evaluations, identifies growth opportunities, and promotes accountability and engagement.
    • Manages service line supplies and capital needs within budgetary parameters; collaborates on cost‑containment and resource utilization strategies.
  • Quality, Education, and Performance Improvement:
    • Leads quality improvement initiatives aimed at optimizing outcomes, efficiency, and patient satisfaction.
    • Reviews policies and procedures for alignment with AORN, AAMI, TJC, and NJDHSS standards.
    • Implements corrective action plans for metrics not meeting established goals, e.g., First Case On‑Time Starts, Turnaround Time, Case Volume Growth.
    • Supports ongoing staff education, competency validation, and orientation in collaboration with the Perioperative Educator.
    • Ensures adherence to evidence‑based practice and integrates current research findings into clinical processes.
  • Interdisciplinary

    Collaboration:

    • Collaborates with physicians, anesthesia, sterile processing, and oncology services to coordinate case prioritization and surgical throughput.
    • Actively participates in service line meetings, operational huddles, and multidisciplinary planning sessions.
    • Provides transparent communication between front‑line staff, surgeons, and perioperative leadership.
Qualifications Required
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • Minimum of 2 years of operating room experience
  • Demonstrated leadership and organizational skills
  • Current Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications
  • Active New Jersey Registered Nurse License
  • CNOR certification
Preferred
  • Master of Science in Nursing or related healthcare leadership field
  • Prior experience as a charge nurse, and throughput optimization metrics
