As a Revenue Auditor with the Nebraska Department of Revenue, you will work with a team of professionals who are engaged with the community and dedicated to public service by administering state revenue laws with integrity, efficiency, and consistency, while maintaining a customer‑focused perspective.
Revenue Auditors acquire and apply significant knowledge of taxation and auditing, benefit from a flexible work schedule that provides a great work/life balance, and serve as auditors in‑charge to guide the development of other audit team members. Five levels exist within the Revenue Auditor series:
Auditor I, II, III, IV, and Revenue Audit Manager, each with a defined developmental path.
- Revenue Auditor I:
Performs work in a training status to build skills in completing various audits and becomes an in‑charge auditor of level 1 and 2 audits. Determinations/findings are reviewed by an Auditor IV or Revenue Audit Manager. - Revenue Auditor II
:
Primarily assigned as in‑charge auditor for level 2 and 3 audits and, as skill develops, the advanced level 4 audits. - Revenue Auditor III
:
Full performance classification; spends the majority of time as in‑charge auditor for the most difficult audits or coordinating specialized audit functions. The advanced level of work, supervision, and special projects distinguish this class.
- Revenue Auditor I:
Bachelor’s degree in business administration or accounting (or equivalent) with at least 24 semester hours in accounting or auditing. - Revenue Auditor II
:
Same degree and hours, plus one year’s experience as an in‑charge auditor. - Revenue Auditor III
:
Same degree and hours, plus CPA licensure with two years as in‑charge auditor or three years of experience as in‑charge auditor.
Positions in this classification are subject to Title 42, Nebraska Administrative Code Chapter 1.002. The basic requirement is a Bachelor’s degree in business administration or equivalent, with at least 24 semester hours in accounting or auditing.
Preferred Qualifications- Direct work experience with Nebraska income tax, sales and use tax, and tax incentives.
- Passed the CPA exam (partial credit for partial completion).
- Background in mathematics or data analytics.
Possession of a valid driver’s license or ability to provide independent authorized transportation for required work‑related travel.
Knowledge of- Generally accepted accounting principles and/or auditing standards, practices, and procedures.
- Financial and statistical audit principles, standards, and procedures.
- State and federal rules, regulations, and statutes pertaining to tax compliance.
- Communicate effectively in person, by telephone, and in writing with co‑workers, supervisors, client representatives, and taxpayers.
- Assertively gather information, explain audit procedures, or testify in hearings and court.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co‑workers, taxpayers, and others involved in the audit process.
- Interpret and apply financial/accounting principles to analytical situations.
- Exercise independent judgment and decisiveness in variety of settings.
- Coordinate and prioritize assignments with competing deadlines.
- Operate computer spreadsheet and data management applications.
- Navigate computer, online, and web‑based accounting systems.
- Perform data analysis to audit, deduce, assess, conclude, and appraise.
