Civil Engineer - Railroad

HDR (employee‑owned) is seeking a Civil Engineer – Railroad for our Freight Railroad Team in Omaha, Nebraska. This role will support the planning, design, and construction of freight rail infrastructure, contributing to safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation.

• Serve in a technical role under a Project Manager.
• Prepare plans, specifications, and cost estimates for railroad track and civil projects for private and public‑sector clients, including layout, geometrics, site, drainage, utilities, quantity calculations, construction submittals, and coordination with other disciplines.
• Act as a project engineer on small‑ to mid‑sized projects and assist senior engineers on larger multi‑disciplinary projects.
• Participate in proposal development and other marketing activities.
• Direct engineers‑in‑training, designers, and technicians.
• Plan, organize, and coordinate with other technical and clerical professionals on multi‑disciplinary teams.
• Assist in the delivery of multi‑disciplinary projects, including planning and environmental clearance processes.
• Perform quality control reviews and design checks of railroad projects.
• May require periodic travel for client visits, site visits, field assessments, and construction inspections.

• Minimum of 3 years of experience in transportation design – railroad projects.
• Knowledge of the legacy InRail/InRoads platform.
• Local project experience is a plus.
• Construction inspection or construction management experience is a plus.

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
• Professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board in the location of the position (e.g., PE or P.Eng).
• Hands‑on experience with Micro Station, Open Rail Designer, AutoCAD, and Civil3D.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Proficiency in MS Office.
• Excellent oral and written communication and project management skills.
