Job DescriptionServes as front‑line representative for the organization by interviewing patients and other sources to screen and obtain demographic and financial data, linking patients to clinical and financial systems of the hospital. Communicates health benefit regulations and patient financial obligations to responsible parties. Handles basic billing activities, makes referrals to appropriate financial resources, and assists patients with applications for Medicaid, Crime Victims Assistance, Social Security Disability programs and the organization’s Financial Assistance Program.
Responsibilities- Gather and record financial and insurance information.
- Perform basic billing activities.
- Make referrals to appropriate financial resources.
- Assist patients in completing applications and referrals to third‑party payers.
- Serve as first contact for patients and internal/external customers seeking financial assistance information.
- Ask key questions to help patients quickly access financial options.
- Use multiple systems and tools to ascertain eligibility for assistance programs.
- Use patient interactions to identify and solve system and process problems.
- High school diploma or GED.
- 6 months of customer service experience.
- Concise written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to interview patients and families for purpose of gathering and exchanging information.
- Basic computer skills, including use of keyboard, mouse, calculator and fax.
- Ability to navigate Intranet, Internet and hospital computer drives.
- Basic Outlook, Word and email communication skills.
- Basic math skills (add, subtract, multiply, divide).
- Ability to work in a busy, loud and demanding environment.
- Independent recognition and evaluation of urgency situations.
- Strong emotional intelligence and empathy.
- Detail‑oriented and accurate.
- Ability to multi‑task and prioritize tasks.
- One year of customer service experience, preferably 6 months–1 year in health‑care or state employment (Family Support Division).
- One year prior experience in a doctor/hospital environment or similar.
- At least one year experience as a Patient Accounts Representative or Patient Access, and/or accounting experience.
