Overview

Phlebotomist Outreach role at Brown University Health. Under supervision of the Manager Laboratory Outreach Services or guidance of the Lead Phlebotomist, performs responsibilities associated with obtaining blood and various other patient specimens in accordance with department procedures. Obtains samples ordered by physicians for routine and specialized tests on assigned unit and from pediatric and adult patients on outpatient units. Transports specimens and completes basic records.

Responsibilities
  • Perform functions to ensure proper collection and documentation of patient specimens using the computer system.
  • Register patients and manage patient identification, demographics, insurance information, order tests, document scanning, and related verification processes following established policies.
  • Manage Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN) processes including obtaining diagnostic codes, document review, patient signature, and document management.
  • Conduct related clerical activities such as medical necessity follow-up, file management, daily checklists, phone coverage, report delivery, and admitting patients to clinical treatment areas as needed.
  • Monitor standing orders for expiration and renewal; provide patients with test forms and pre-collection preparation instructions.
  • Schedule venipunctures or capillary punctures according to test priority and type of study; ensure specimens are collected in proper containers and meet collection requirements.
  • Verify patient identity and prep prior to venipuncture; alert staff to deviations or adverse patient conditions.
  • Collect samples for specialized tests as required (e.g., thyroid releasing hormone, therapeutic drug monitoring, D-Xylose tolerance); process samples (e.g., centrifugation) and track specimens.
  • Label, wrap, and transport samples according to type and urgency; maintain records of sample procurement.
  • Perform duties in accordance with hospital policy and universal precautions; contact nursing staff or supervisor as needed.
  • Provide patient instructions, assist with home sample collection where applicable, and conduct additional patient information gathering to complete records.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED;
    Phlebotomy certificate through the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences or completion of a Phlebotomy certificate program with formal internship showing 100 successful venipunctures.
  • In lieu of internship: 6 months phlebotomy experience may be considered.
  • In lieu of phlebotomy certification: 5+ years direct phlebotomy experience may be considered.
  • Ability to perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on adults, children, and infants; strong interpersonal skills to explain procedures and reduce anxiety.
  • Clerical skills to prepare and maintain records, including keyboard skills for data entry; familiarity with blood collection equipment and safety precautions.
  • Ability to distinguish colors and a valid Phlebotomy certificate may be required.

Physical Requirements
  • In-patient care environment with considerable walking; may require physical effort with uncooperative patients.
  • Exposure to odors and possible exposure to communicable diseases with adherence to infection control procedures.
  • Manual dexterity to perform venipunctures.

$17.69-$27.90
