RINA is looking for a highly experienced Lead Design Engineer to join its growing Power Systems Consulting team, delivering complex Substation Design and Power Systems Studies engagements for large power and electricity corporations, DNOs, utility companies and Data Center operators. The portfolio is broad, advising clients on complex issues such a grid capacity/integration, high voltage power line design, site surveys, carbon capture and other sustainable engineering solutions.
This is an exciting opportunity to advise the Electrical Power sector on developing modern and sustainable solutions. This role can be based out of our Manchester, Leatherhead, Chippenham, or our Lincoln offices. RINA offers a hybrid working environment, though you must live within a commutable distance from one of our offices. Moderate travel across the UK is required though.
You will lead Substation Design projects ensuring solutions are compliant, safe and adhere to industry standards.
Role Responsibilities- Act as technical lead for substation design project deliverables ranging from 11 kV to 400 kV, including HV/EHV air-insulated and gas-insulated substations.
- Lead or contribute to client meetings and technical workshops related to substation engineering.
- Produce detailed substation electrical design packages compliant with client and applicable national/international standards (ENA, BS, IEC, IEEE, ANSI, etc.).
- Prepare and review engineering calculations, technical reports, and equipment specifications.
- Develop technical documentation including design reports, scheme evaluations, and presentations, particularly for FEED and concept-stage projects.
- Ensure compliance and QA with CDM Regulations and all other applicable legal and regulatory requirements related to substation and electrical system design.
- Drive and embed a Safety-by-Design approach across all projects.
- Provide engineering input to budgets, schedules, forecasts, and risk and change management activities.
- Work closely with Protection & Control, Civil/Structural, and other engineering disciplines to support multidisciplinary project delivery.
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers, graduates, and consultants.
- Electrical Engineering graduate (preferably CEng).
- At least 10 years’ experience working in electrical transmission and distribution engineering environments, of which at least 2 years’ project experience will have been within the UK.
- Demonstrable power system design experience up to 132 kV, preferably up to 400 kV, across a range of industrial, distribution, and transmission network projects.
- Proven experience in one or more of the following areas: substation physical/primary design, substation protection & control design, and SCADA system design/development.
- Strong knowledge of applicable legislation, regulations, and industry standards.
- Strong technical knowledge across some of the following:
- Single-line diagrams and substation layouts
- CT/VT selection and calculations
- Auxiliary AC/DC power systems
- Power cable systems
- Secondary engineering and protection & control systems
- Working knowledge of Micro Station and AutoCAD.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- Demonstrable involvement in mentoring and developing graduate engineers and junior consultants.
- Good understanding of UK environmental and waste management legislation and compliance requirements.
- Experience supporting business development is advantageous.
- Experience in installation and commissioning activities is desirable.
- Must be eligible to work within the UK without employer sponsorship and willing to commute or relocate to Manchester.
