We're looking for a committed and proactive Floating / Multi-Storey Caretaker to help maintain our housing estates and high-rise residential buildings across the city.
This varied role combines hands‑on caretaking within multi‑storey blocks with mobile estate‑based work across a range of neighbourhoods. One day you may be carrying out inspections, cleaning communal areas and supporting safety checks in a high‑rise building. The next, you could be travelling between estates, maintaining external environments, monitoring grounds maintenance standards and responding to estate‑related issues.
As a highly visible member of the Housing team, you'll play an important role in ensuring residents live in clean, safe and well‑managed communities. You'll work closely with tenants, leaseholders, colleagues and contractors, taking pride in maintaining high standards and identifying issues before they elevate.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys practical work, can work independently, adapts to changing priorities and takes a positive, customer‑focused approach to service delivery.
What you'll be doing:- Working across both multi-storey blocks and housing estates in line with service requirements and rota arrangements.
- Cleaning and maintaining communal areas, refuse disposal areas and external estate environments to a high standard.
- Carrying out regular inspections of buildings, communal land and estate environments.
- Conducting fire safety, health and safety and estate management checks.
- Supporting the safe day‑to‑day operation of designated buildings, operational properties and land.
- Maintaining external areas including footpaths, drying areas, communal spaces, garage sites and parking areas.
- Removing litter, fly‑tipping, waste and biohazards safely and in accordance with Council procedures.
- Monitoring grounds maintenance services and reporting concerns regarding estate standards or contractor performance.
- Identifying and reporting repairs, hazards and maintenance issues affecting communal areas.
- Reporting incidents of vandalism, misuse of communal areas, anti‑social behaviour and breaches of tenancy conditions.
- Acting as a visible presence on estates and within residential blocks, providing a professional point of contact for residents, leaseholders and visitors.
- Providing access and support to contractors working within designated estates and buildings.
- Travelling between multiple locations across the city using a Council vehicle.
- Participating in standby and call‑out arrangements when required.
- Ability to work and communicate with all customers and clients.
- Ability to handle conflict and adopt a firm but fair approach.
- Be prepared to work flexibly including working outside normal office hours e.g. evening and weekends.
- Ability to work in a non‑discriminatory manner, in accordance with the Council's Equality and Diversity Policy.
- Flexible working options / Flexi time scheme.
- Generous annual leave entitlement plus bank holidays.
- Employee online discount scheme (including cinema, retail / supermarkets and homeware / tech).
- Health and Wellbeing support.
- Sustainable Travel Options (Tax free bike scheme and discounted City parking).
All external candidates are subject to satisfactory pre‑employment checks and a 6‑month probationary period. This role also requires a basic DBS check.
