Due to the secure nature of the programme, you will need to hold UK Security Clearance or be eligible to go through this clearance. This is a full‑time, on‑site position based 5 days per week at a site in Lincoln.

Your future duties and responsibilities

In this role, you will design, develop and support secure, high‑quality Java‑based solutions that underpin a complex defence system. You’ll take ownership of the full software lifecycle, from understanding user needs and shaping technical solutions through to deployment, operation and continuous improvement. Working closely with engineers, analysts and users, you’ll help ensure systems remain robust, resilient and fit for purpose, while mentoring junior colleagues and contributing to a collaborative, high‑performance environment.

  • Develop & deliver clean, secure and well‑tested software aligned to modern standards
  • Lead & support system operation, monitoring and fault resolution in live environments
  • Collaborate & influence across disciplines to shape effective technical solutions
  • Improve & optimise system resilience, stability and performance
  • Coordinate & support build, integration and testing activities
  • Coach & mentor junior team members, sharing knowledge and best practice

You will also play a key role in improving standards and practices, supporting integration and testing activities, and resolving live service issues to maintain operational effectiveness and performance.

Required qualifications to be successful in this role

You will be an experienced Java developer with a strong background in web technologies and enterprise systems, comfortable working in secure, mission‑critical environments. You should demonstrate a broad technical skillset, an analytical mindset, and the ability to take responsibility for both delivery and continuous improvement within a collaborative team.

Essential qualifications and experience
  • Strong commercial experience in Java development
  • Significant experience installing and configuring web technologies, including Apache and Solr
  • Experience with proxy server configuration
  • Strong understanding of JSON data structures and RESTful web services
  • Experience authoring XSL/XSLT and working extensively with XML
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Server OS, including Hyper‑V
  • Experience with requirements engineering and testing techniques
  • Ability to use mapping tools such as Altova Map Force
  • Experience creating lightweight user interfaces using HTML/CSS
  • Experience with Oracle Forms, Reports, PL/SQL and SVN
  • Familiarity with tools such as Net Beans, TOAD, JDeveloper and Tortoise SVN
  • Experience working in both Windows and Unix environments
  • Exposure to additional languages such as C++ or .NET Framework
