Position Purpose
This position is responsible for electrical and mechanical maintenance of equipment in the Equipment Department Shop, including machinery upgrades and light shop building repairs. The individual may also be assigned to car maintenance and repairs as needed.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities- Perform preventive maintenance, overhaul, repair, and upgrade of car shop machinery, including Car wash, Component Wash, and Blow pit buildings and equipment.
- Troubleshoot relay-based, analog electronic, computer-based, hydraulic, and pneumatic control systems.
- Perform diagnostic tests for maintenance purposes.
- Keep equipment maintenance records updated and complete.
- Operate equipment necessary to access machinery (lift platforms, bucket truck, etc.).
- Organize and analyze complex information to resolve problems timely.
- Pursue training and development to continuously build knowledge and skills; share expertise with others.
- Manage difficult customer situations and respond promptly to customer needs while maintaining confidentiality.
- Read, understand written and verbal instructions, speak and write clearly to communicate effectively; demonstrate group presentation skills.
- Display openness to others’ views, balance team and individual responsibilities, and support a positive team spirit.

RequiredEducation and/or Experience
- High school graduate or GED with post‑high‑school coursework in electrical and mechanical fields.
- Five (5) years of industrial plant maintenance experience.
- Knowledge of specialized safety procedures (lockout/tag‑out, confined space, etc.).
- Experience with electrical control systems, relay logic, PLCs, industrial computer systems, AC/DC motors and drives, servomotors, proximity, optical and chemical sensors, and various control panels and motor control centers.
- Valid Driver’s License with no major violations for the last three years.
- Experience with industrial plumbing systems, pneumatic systems, and basic hydraulics.
- Proficient at reading electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic schematics and PLC ladder diagrams.
- Familiar with basic commercial building electrical supply, lighting, and controls.
- Pass an examination testing electrical and mechanical knowledge.
- Use of industrial hand and power tools, measuring devices, gauges, test instruments, material handling equipment (bridge cranes, forklift trucks, hi‑rail equipped vehicles, elevated work platforms), power cleaning, abrasive cleaning, painting equipment, heating equipment, and electrical diagnostic equipment.
The employee must occasionally walk, stoop, bend, crawl, ascend/descend stairs, steps and ladders, and support components weighing up to 140 lbs. The employee must have manual dexterity for disassembly and assembly of small components, visual acuity for identifying small parts, and the ability to avoid workplace obstacles. The employee must detect audible warnings in a rail car maintenance shop environment, climb up and down a rung ladder, climb transit cars with up to 3‑ft step heights, and lift legs up to 24 inches to clear third rail.
The employee must be able to wear a respirator and withstand heights over 150 feet. All duties are subject to PATCO’s Substance Abuse Testing and Control Policy, including random drug and alcohol testing.
The work environment is generally inside with general lighting, heating, and ventilation. Cleaning tasks are performed outdoors under prevailing climate conditions. Occasionally work is performed in rail storage yards, along active railroad rights of way, on bridges and in subways. Work spaces can be confined; flashlights or other lighting may be required. Ladders and/or work platforms are necessary to access equipment. The employee is required to sit 20% of the time, stand and walk 60%, and lift, climb, and bend 20%.
Protective clothing, eye protection, hearing protection, dust masks, and respirators are provided.
