Overview
The laborer is an entry level position with no prior knowledge or experience required in scrap metals and recycling. The laborer must be able to learn and demonstrate a strong work ethic. The laborer will assist in daily operations such as scrap inspection, sortation, and general yard maintenance as directed.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities- Follow all established Gerdau safety, environmental, and yard procedures
- Operate the fork-lift with progression toward loader operation and material handler duties to assist in loading, off-loading, and sorting scrap materials
- Inspect incoming scrap against quality and environmental standards with progression toward grading and purchasing scrap material
- Apply deductions to non-conforming materials through effective communication with the scale house or yard inspector
- Perform and document daily Routine Equipment Care (REC)
- Detect and report faulty tools, equipment, environmental hazards, and safety hazards to a supervisor
- Maintain work area and equipment in a clean and orderly fashion
- Promote and practice the core values of Gerdau
- For operations that have rail: shift full and empty cars, operate locomotive, activate switches, couple and uncouple cars, and set brakes or wheel blocks as requested in accordance with standard operating procedures
- Ensure non-conforming objects are removed from incoming scrap vehicles (e.g., drained gas tanks, propane tanks, batteries)
- Ensure radioactive materials are removed from inbound/outbound scrap material and quarantined properly
- General housekeeping: sweep shop area and remove garbage
- Assist in non-ferrous sorting and processing as directed by the non-ferrous operator
- Assist co-workers in general operational duties essential to the yard in safety, efficiency, and profitability
- Contribute to problem solving as required
