Director of Engineering Strategy - R

Northrop Grumman invites applications for the Director of Engineering Strategy (R). This role focuses on leading strategy development aligned with Engineering & Sciences (E&S) and Mission Systems sector objectives while driving cost, performance, schedule, and innovation across engineering activities.

Location and Relocation

Location:

Linthicum Heights, MD. Relocation assistance may be available.

Travel

Travel required:

25% of the time.

Security Clearance

Security clearance:
Secret (a current/active DoW Secret Clearance is required; or DoE equivalent). Preferred: active DoW Top‑Secret clearance or higher, with ability to obtain TS/SCI and Special Access Clearance.

Responsibilities
  • Drive E&S long‑term strategy through market assessments, technology roadmaps, and emerging opportunities to support growth and profitability.
  • Lead collaborative partnerships with sector and company stakeholders to align engineering strategy with business goals.
  • Define and implement near‑, mid‑, and long‑term actions necessary to achieve engineering strategy.
  • Coordinate new market initiatives and secure strategic investment to support execution.
  • Partner with Strategy and Mission Solutions to incorporate customer needs into product roadmaps.
  • Engage external partners, academia, and industry to inform strategy.
  • Collaborate with Chief Information and Digital Office to execute E&S strategy and integrate future technologies.
  • Implement Mission Product Lifecycle Management infrastructure to enable digital thread.
  • Prioritize digital transformation and AI assistance to improve productivity.
  • Develop plans for new tools and reduce redundant tools to enhance commonality.
  • Support scalability and cost‑effective delivery through data‑driven optimization.
  • Lead sector‑wide strategic actions to enhance competitiveness and growth.
  • Identify future critical skills, develop training tracks, and ensure workforce readiness.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree with minimum 10 years of experience, or Master’s degree with minimum 8 years, or PhD with minimum 6 years in STEM related technical fields.
  • Minimum 5 years of success leading and managing diverse technical teams on large or complex systems involving mechanical, electrical, and software elements.
  • Prior experience in strategy and/or market development.
  • Experience working across multiple lines of business and functional disciplines (manufacturing, supply chain, business management, strategy & business development).
  • Experience with internal corporate projects.
  • Technical experience in Systems, Software, Hardware, or Cybersecurity engineering with understanding of engineering processes.
  • Knowledge of engineering processes, metrics, hiring, staffing, tools, and training resources.
  • Ability to innovate and implement change while challenging traditional ways.
  • Ability to operate independently, collaborate across the corporation, and work in teams.
  • Balanced technical, interpersonal, and business capabilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Current/active DoW Secret Clearance required; or DoE Equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced STEM degree.
  • Active DoW Top‑Secret clearance or higher; or DoE Equivalent.
  • Program management experience with profit and loss accountability.
  • Prior experience in strategy and/or market development and driving engineering partnerships.
  • Technical experience in Systems, Software, Hardware, or Cybersecurity engineering within defense or aerospace.
  • Understanding of engineering process with ISO 9001, AS9100, CMMI.
  • Ability to partner with stakeholders to balance project‑level execution and enterprise‑level efficiencies.
  • Success in championing organizational change for competitive advantage.
  • Experience leading geographically dispersed functional teams.
  • Experience engaging with and briefing all management levels.
  • Proven success in creating and executing affordability initiatives.
Salary and Benefits
