Vanrath are recruiting for a Home Safety Officer on behalf of a large public sector body in Lisburn on a temporary basis. What's in it for you? 18.5hours Temporary £15.31ph KEY PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
The post holder will work under the direction of the Environmental Health Manager and the day-to-day supervision of the Home Safety Co-ordinator to ensure the efficient and effective implementation and co-ordination of the home safety and shall assist with other relevant educational, training and promotional activities.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES The services falling within the responsibility of this post are as follows:
1. Travel to private homes, using own vehicle, within the constituent Council area as part of the home safety check scheme to carry out inspections for safety hazards, advise residents on home safety and testing smoke alarms, use of carbon monoxide detectors, etc. based on current knowledge of risk and good practice. 2. On a single officer basis carry out a needs assessment, provide approved equipment on this basis, and ensure that residents know how to use it safely to reduce the risk of accidental injury.
3. Regular stock taking to replenish and distribute heavy items i.e. fireguards/stairgates etc. 4. Make appropriate referrals to statutory agencies such as NIFRS, Occupational Therapists, Social Services, Northern Ireland Housing Executive, Policing Community Safety Partnership, Sensory Support Team, local councils, voluntary and community groups such as Good Morning Call Scheme, Safe and Well projects and Sure Start on basis of a needs assessment and with the content of the resident.
5. Maintain written records of each home safety visit, complete computer records using the Tascomi system.
6. Meet target of home visits in each Council area based on Service Level Agreements with PHA and other agencies, giving priority to those at most risk.
7. Undertake such duties to enhance and project the reputation and public profile of the Council.
8. Attend training sessions and meetings as required to include supporting HAP groups at local level.
9. Support the Home Safety Co-ordinator in raising the profile of Home Safety issues throughout the constituent Council areas of the Environmental Health Committee. 10. Training students as and when required, ie. Environmental Health students, Occupational Therapy students, Nursing Students and work experience students. 11. Training/supervision of new and temporarily assigned employees. 12. Working with adults at risk, older people over the age of 65, families and ethnic minorities where there is a language or sensory barriers.
13. Quarterly statistical returns and updates to relevant government bodies ie. PHA and monthly target updates to the Home Safety Coordinator. 14. Working in rural, isolated and socially deprived areas. 15. Keep under review developments in the field of home safety to ensure a sound knowledge of current statistical information, legislation, specific hazards and their avoidance, current good practice and official guidance.
16. Support the Home safety Co-ordinator with educational and promotional work related to Home Safety as part of as agreed programme of activities, including organising and implementing campaigns and exhibitions, preparation of public material, source/design/preparation of promotional materials, and giving talks to relevant groups e.g. Council Summer Schemes, Health Visitor talks. 17. Carry out administration duties in relation to home safety and answer general enquiries.
Criteria Essential: GCSE in English & Maths
Experience of working with members of the public in a community, housing, health, or support setting Experience providing advice, guidance or support to service users
Experience of maintaining accurate written and electronic records Ability to work independently and manage own workload Desirable: NVQ Level 3 or above in Health & Social Care, Environmental Health, Community Safety or related area First Aid Certificate Manual Handling / Risk Assessment Training
Experience of home visiting or lone working IND
