Education Consultant 1 (B.E.S.B.) - Teacher of the Visually Impaired
Join the Bureau of Education and Services for the Blind (BESB) to deliver specialized instruction and consultation for students who are blind, have low vision, or experience multiple impairments. As a content expert, you will provide the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) and empower students to achieve independence and academic success.
Position Highlights- Location:
Litchfield, Norwalk, or Tolland – one position per town. - Schedule:
Monday‑Friday, 8:30 AM‑4:15 PM (35 hrs / wk) - Work Environment:

Purpose of Job Class (Nature of Work)On an itinerant basis, provide special instruction in Braille and related subjects to visually handicapped students in public schools; perform related work as required.
Examples of Duties- Instruct specialized and basic skills of Braille reading and writing, typewriting, and support math, science, or art adaptations as assigned.
- Plan and arrange specialized materials and equipment such as Braille writers, large print textbooks, talking book machines.
- Act as an interpreter between school and home.
- Assist in securing appropriate training other than public school education.
- Help parents with proper school placement.
- Arrange diagnostic evaluations; serve on division committees; make case reports; answer correspondence clearly.
- Speak before parents, volunteers, and professional groups; perform related work as required.
- Knowledge of principles and methods of education for blind and visually handicapped, especially Braille instruction.
- Oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with others.
A Bachelor’s degree with at least twelve (12) semester hours in courses applicable to the blind or partially-sighted.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience teaching assistive technology equipment to students who are blind or visually impaired.
- Experience teaching the Expanded Core Curriculum to such students.
- Experience teaching Braille to such students.
- Experience adapting curriculum for students who are blind or visually impaired.
Possession of a certificate in special education in the area of teaching the blind or partially-sighted issued by the State Board of Education OR eligibility for or possession of a Durational Shortage Area Permit (DSAP).
