Summary

This position provides security and police services to the State Capitol Building and State Capitol Complex area on behalf of the Secretary of State.

Functions

Periodically patrols buildings and grounds of the Capitol building and Complex area on foot and in patrol vehicle and examines doors, windows, and gates to determine they are secure.

Enforce all traffic and criminal laws of the State of Arkansas, and make arrest and/or issue citations for violations.

Investigate allegations of persons engaged in criminal or suspicious activities on Capitol grounds.

Respond to calls for police service, write and file police reports.

Assist rescue units and other law enforcement agencies responding to calls as necessary.

Provide security to the Secretary of State on-site and during travel as necessary.

Watch for and report irregularities such as fire hazards, leaking water pipes, doors left open, and maintenance issues.

Answer questions and assist visitors to the State Capitol building, and provide other information as requested.

Assist elected officials, staff, and other state agencies and offices as necessary or when requested.

Other duties may be assigned as necessary by the Secretary of State and/or Chief of Police.

Dimensions

The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

The employee is regularly required to use hands, talk, hear, taste, and smell.

The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods of time.

The employee is occasionally required to stand, reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.

The employee may occasionally be required to move up to 100 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required for the job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Other physical abilities may be required by the Arkansas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Training.

While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions.

The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic and/or caustic chemicals, and loud noises.

The employee may be exposed to dangerous situations.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and policy and procedure manuals. Ability to write reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to visitors, legislators, constitutional officers and other employees.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

Minimum Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Licenses

Certified as a Law Enforcement Officer in the State of Arkansas or the ability to become certified within one year of employment. Must meet all Minimum Standards requirements as set by the Arkansas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Training.
