Diagnostic Medical Sonographer

Brief Description

The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is responsible for the independent operation of sonographic equipment and performing and communicating results of diagnostic examinations using sonography. The Sonographer always maintains a high standard of medical ethics and is self-motivated to increase level of understanding and knowledge of the field, disease and new procedures as they evolve.

• Performs clinical assessment and diagnostic sonography examinations.
• Uses cognitive sonographic skills to identify, record and adapt procedures as appropriate to anatomical, pathological, diagnostic information and images.
• Uses independent judgment during the sonographic exam to accurately differentiate between normal and pathological findings.
• Analyses sonograms, synthesizes sonographic information, medical history, and communicates findings to the appropriate physician.
• Assumes responsibility for the safety, mental and physical comfort of patients while they are in the sonographer’s care.
• Assists with the daily operations of the sonographic department.
• Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
• Performs all requested sonographic examinations as ordered by the attending physician.
• Prepares preliminary reports and contacts referring physicians when required, according to established procedures.
• Coordinates with other team members to ensure appropriate patient care is provided.
• Identifies patient care issues as they occur and takes appropriate action to resolve them.
• Organizes daily work schedule and performs related clerical duties as required.
• Reports equipment failures to the appropriate supervisor or team member.

• This role requires frequent travel (minimum of 4 days per week, up to 5 days) to support imaging services across multiple CARTI locations.
• Coverage may include locations within Central Arkansas, Southeast Arkansas (Delta region), and the Arkansas River Valley / West-Central Arkansas.
• There is no fixed weekly rotation; schedules may vary based on patient volumes, site needs, and operational priorities.
• Schedules are communicated in advance by leadership.
• Use of a company fleet vehicle or mileage reimbursement may be available depending on availability, home location, and operational needs.

• High school diploma.
• Graduate of a formal accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program.
• Current Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) credential required.
• Current BLS required.

• Minimum one or more years’ experience and/or training with graduate sonographer
• Knowledge of anatomy and physiology necessary to perform testing including body mechanics and patient movement
• Skill in using computer network system competently to process patient and department information
• Skill in positioning patients properly
• Skill in identifying equipment problems and corrects or notifies supervisor
• Ability to work in a cooperative nature within and outside department with staff, patients, and families
• Ability to explain procedures clearly and simply to patients

• Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
• Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or schedule form.

• Must interact and communicate both verbally and in written form.
• Must interact and exchange information regarding patients with physicians and other departmental personnel, and outside agencies on a frequent basis while respecting the confidentiality of patient information.

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.
• The employee regularly is required to stand, walk, sit, use hand to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
