Brief DescriptionThe Flow Cytometry Technologist provides administrative, scientific, and technical expertise and support to the flow cytometry testing section of the clinical laboratory. The technologist participates in implementation, technical support, customer service, compliance, and continual service development. He/she is responsible for maintaining a working knowledge of the theory behind all methodologies within the assigned scope of service and possesses the skills necessary to ensure regulatory compliance and meet patient/clinician needs.
The technologist collaborates with the administrative director, doctoral staff, and other laboratory leadership to support departmental growth and efficiency.
Job Duties And Responsibilities
- Operates all equipment necessary to perform flow cytometry testing.
- Completes all aspects of leukemia-lymphoma immunophenotyping, including sample preparation, staining, acquisition, and data analysis.
- Works closely with the pathologist to communicate all test results.
- Supports adequate interaction with laboratory and clinical staff.
- Identifies and performs appropriate panels based on diagnosis; obtains additional information from physicians and clinical staff to make informed decisions; defers to pathologist when necessary.
- Assists with the development, optimization, and validation of new tests.
- Supports administrative duties including writing and maintaining procedures, completing proficiency testing, and managing supply inventory as needed.
- Prepares reagent stock and working solutions.
- Monitors proper use and consumption of reagents, materials, and consumables.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisors.
- Monitors the satisfactory operation of all flow cytometers; reports any defects; conducts basic preventive maintenance of equipment in relevant laboratory areas; adheres to operational and maintenance procedures under facility SOPs for all core equipment.
- Adheres to relevant health and safety regulations.
- Understands, maintains, and assists in updating QC/QA programs.

Education, Certification, Licensure, Registration- Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Biology, or another related life science.
- Or successful completion of a U.S. Military medical laboratory training program of at least 50 weeks duration, with documented experience as a Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician).
- Current certification or certification eligibility within 12 months of hire as a Medical Laboratory Scientist / Medical Technologist by ASCP BOC, or as a Medical Laboratory Scientist by AMT, or an equivalent national certifying agency.
- SCYM(ASCP) Specialist in Cytometry or other relevant ASCP specialist credential, preferred.
Skills And Abilities
- Minimum three (3) years of experience in flow cytometry testing within a clinical laboratory setting is required.
- Prior experience in a high-complexity laboratory environment and familiarity with regulatory standards (e.g., CLIA, CAP) is preferred.
- Competency with Becton‑Dickinson flow cytometry instrumentation.
- Ability to use good problem‑solving techniques.
- Demonstrated attention to detail.
- Team‑oriented and results‑driven.
- Advanced organizational and analytical skills.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or schedule form.
- Must interact and communicate both verbally and in written form.
- Must interact and exchange information regarding patients with physicians and other departmental personnel, and outside agencies on a frequent basis while respecting the confidentiality of patient information.
