Summary ofJob Duties
This posting will fill multiple positions:
Ophthalmic Assistant, Certified Assistant, Certified Technician, Certified Medical Technologist.
The following roles all require direct patient contact and teamwork:
- Ophthalmic Assistant (OA)
- Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA)
- Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT)
- Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT)
- Ophthalmic Assistant:
- High School diploma/GED plus one year of ophthalmic/optometric assisting, patient care, customer service, or related experience.
- Current BLS certification or must obtain certification within 30 days of employment.
- Preferred:
One year of ophthalmic/optometric assisting or experience in a medical setting.
- Certified Ophthalmic Assistant:
- High School diploma/GED plus one year of ophthalmic/optometric assisting experience required.
- Current Ophthalmic Assistant Certification.
- Current BLS certification or must obtain within 30 days of employment.
- Certified Ophthalmic Technician:
- High School diploma/GED plus two years of ophthalmic/optometric assisting experience required.
- Current Ophthalmic Assistant Certification.
- Current BLS certification or must obtain within 30 days of employment.
- Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist:
- High School diploma/GED plus three years of ophthalmic/optometric assisting experience required.
- Current Ophthalmic Assistant Certification.
- Current BLS certification or must obtain within 30 days of employment.
- All Levels:
- Good communication skills and ability to handle demanding and/or stressful requests from patients, phone calls, attending physicians, and refill requests.
- Focus on clinical ophthalmic eye exam, procedure, and equipment needs.
- Understand urgency of clinical and physician requests.
- Reports directly to the Clinical Programs Director; follows instructions from the Clinical Supervisor.
- Patient Care: Provide direct patient assessment, measuring visual acuity for all levels of acuity (counting fingers, hand motion, light perception, no light perception) and for non‑literacy, illiterate, non‑verbal, or foreign‑language patients. Record and test visual acuity, stereo acuity, near point of accommodation, convergence, and use various visual tests (Allen, Tumbling E, numbers, Snellen).
