Assists physicians and nurses with the simple care of orthopedic patients. Knowledgeable of orthopedic treatments provided by physicians. Skilled in applying and removing casts, braces, and splints as well as the use of orthopedic appliances. May assist the physician or nurse with orthopedic procedures.

High school diploma or GED or equivalent
Required Work Experience
2 years of relevant experience; HS Diploma or GED may substitute for 2 years of work experience

Description
Applies and removes casts, braces, and splints per physician orders.Performs wound care and dressing changes per physician orders.Assists patients when learning to use orthopedic appliances.Assists the physician or nurse with orthopedic procedures.Completes patient care (may include V/S, I&Os, heights, weights, head circumference, ADL's and other patient care related assignments) in a safe, efficient, and timely manner.Documents patient care and other assignments according to department guidelines.Recognizes and reports changes in patient condition to licensed staff.Communicates patient/family information to health care team members to assist with individualizing the patient plan of care.Practices universal precautions/isolation techniques according to hospital policy.Recognizes unsafe and emergency situations and reacts appropriately.Maintains supplies in the cast room on a daily basis and ensures that the room is kept neat and clean at all times.Practices cost effective use of supplies.Identifies faulty equipment and initiates the repair process.Assures charges for orthopedic procedures and equipment are completed.Provides instructions for care of casts and other orthopedic appliances to nursing personnel and/or families as requested.Utilizes available communication tools (OA, staff meetings, bulletin boards) to remain informed.Consistently demonstrates that new knowledge and skills gained from education are incorporated into actual clinical practice.Performs other duties as assigned.Arkansas Children's provides equal employment opportunity to all persons without regard to age, race, color, religion, national origin or citizenship status, disability, military status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, pregnancy or any other category protected by federal, state and local laws.
