Job DescriptionWe are seeking an Engineering & Maintenance Manager for the Optics Materials Science & Technology (OMST) team at the National Ignition Facility & Photon Science (NIF&PS). The role requires guiding the OMST Engineering team in operations, system upgrades, reliability engineering, and lifecycle sustainment planning.
Responsibilities- Lead multidisciplinary teams in designing, upgrading, commissioning, and maintaining specialized optics processing systems.
- Provide strategic and technical leadership to ensure reliability, quality, and mission delivery.
- Oversee recruiting, training, and performance management for engineering staff.
- Champion reliability and lifecycle sustainment using advanced systems engineering and reliability engineering methods.
- Ensure continuous availability, performance, and safety of complex optics systems.
- Implement upgrades, reliability‑centered maintenance, and new technologies.
- Develop long‑range strategies for OMST facility needs and integrate new programs.
- Identify and apply innovative improvements to enhance performance and reduce total cost of ownership.
- Manage financial planning and resource allocation for operations, including a $3M annual procurement budget.
- Mentor engineering staff on LLNL and NIF processes and maintain relationships with vendors and subcontractors.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- U.S. DOE Q‑level security clearance (U.S. citizenship required).
- Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience.
- Extensive experience leading large, multidisciplinary technical and operations teams.
- Strategic planning, resource optimization, and innovation in technical settings.
- Experience managing multi‑million dollar budgets and applying systems and reliability engineering principles.
- Expertise in facility operations with specialized optics processing systems.
- Strong communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills.
- Master’s degree in Physics, Engineering, or related field.
- Experience with reliability‑centered maintenance, FMEA, or fault‑tree analysis.
- Familiarity with safety and quality systems in high‑consequence environments.
- Experience supporting regulated operations in defense, energy, or national security contexts.
- Prior military or nuclear or naval propulsion program experience.
