Job Description

Lead a team advancing world‑class optics processing capabilities in support of national security science. Apply strategic vision to strengthen the foundation of a premier optics processing operation.

As the OMST Engineering & Maintenance Manager, you will provide strategic and technical leadership to a multidisciplinary team responsible for designing, upgrading, commissioning, and maintaining specialized optics processing systems at LLNL and off‑site vendor locations. You will collaborate with OMST teams and other programs across the NIF&PS directorate to ensure effective planning, execution, and continuous improvement of engineering and maintenance activities.

This position is part of the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division within the Engineering Directorate.

In This Role You Will

  • Lead teams, programs, or functions with technical focus, exercising judgement to monitor workflow, allocate resources, and influence high‑level strategic plans.
  • Provide strategic technical and operational leadership to a highly skilled, multidisciplinary team of engineers, technicians, and designers.
  • Drive recruiting, hiring, training, and performance management to meet programmatic staffing and development needs.
  • Champion reliability and lifecycle sustainment by developing and applying advanced methods in systems engineering, reliability engineering, condition‑based maintenance, and asset management.
  • Ensure continuous availability, performance, and safety of highly complex optics processing systems.
  • Lead implementation of upgrades, reliability‑centered maintenance, and deployment of new technologies and process improvements.
  • Develop long‑range strategies to meet current and future OMST facility needs.
  • Identify and implement innovative improvements in process, system design, and maintenance approaches.
  • Oversee financial planning and resource allocation, including a $3M annual procurement budget.
  • Mentor engineering staff and develop relationships with off‑site vendors and subcontractors.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q level security clearance (U.S. citizenship required).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Engineering, or related technical field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proven experience in championing, developing, implementing, and leading innovative principles in facility operations.
  • Leadership experience directing large, multi‑disciplinary technical and operations teams in highly complex environments.
  • Strong strategic planning, resource optimization, and innovation driving skills.
  • Experience managing multi‑million‑dollar budgets and aligning annual priorities with organizational goals.
  • Experience in facility operations involving cleanliness, stability, controls, and specialized optics processing systems.
  • Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills.
  • Experience resolving highly complex technical issues and sustaining critical infrastructure.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Master’s degree in Physics, Engineering, or related technical field.
  • Expert level experience with reliability‑centered maintenance, FMEA, or fault tree analysis.
  • Familiarity with safety and quality systems in high‑consequence environments.
  • Experience supporting regulated operations in defense, energy, or national security contexts.
  • Prior military or civilian nuclear or naval propulsion program experience.
