Systems Engineer, Test Engineer, Electronics Engineer, Electrical Engineering
Job Description We have multiple openings for experienced Senior Laser Electro-Optics Technologists to support the Extreme Light, Matter and Fusion Directorate projects. This includes supporting the operation, maintenance, integration, troubleshooting, and continued development of advanced laser and electro-optical systems.
These positions will support a broad range of laboratory-owned equipment, including continuous-wave (CW), pulsed, high-energy, and specialized laser systems, as well as associated optical, opto-mechanical, diagnostic, control, and support equipment.
Assignments may involve laboratory operations, experimental support, system upgrades, equipment integration, vendor coordination, or off-site technical support, depending on project and operational needs.
In these roles, you will exercise general technical and limited administrative authority, regularly interact with upper management and technical staff outside your immediate work unit, and independently collaborate with scientists, engineers, vendors, and skilled technical personnel.
You may lead, train, or mentor other technical staff and will be responsible for technical commitments and interpretation of requirements and standards for complex laser systems.
Some positions may require periodic travel to off-site vendor facilities or other locations. These positions are in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division within the Engineering Directorate.
This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.
In this role you will
- Independently analyze complex system performance of laser and electro-optical technology and processes using advanced methods and sound technical judgment, identifying problems, providing input on solutions, and presenting data to a peer review team with recommendations.
- Interpret requirements and apply established methods to set priorities for optical, opto-mechanical, diagnostic, control, and support systems.
- Align, operate, maintain, and troubleshoot complex laser systems ranging from continuous-wave sources to high-energy pulsed laser systems.
- Configure and optimize laser and optical system parameters to meet operational, experimental, and performance requirements.
- Modify, integrate, install, and operate advanced laser diagnostic systems to monitor and characterize laser and system performance.
- Support the development and execution of laser operating strategies, including pulse shaping or other parameter optimization techniques, when applicable.
- Troubleshoot, repair, upgrade, and verify the performance of complex laser systems, diagnostics, and related equipment with minimal instruction or direction.
- Support system integration, commissioning, acceptance testing, and performance verification.
- When assigned to off-site support, maintain, troubleshoot, upgrade, and verify the performance of laboratory-owned laser and electro-optical systems; coordinate with vendor personnel and internal stakeholders, and travel periodically to the off-site facility or other locations as required to support equipment and project objectives.
- Generate and maintain comprehensive system documentation, including operational procedures, alignment protocols, diagnostic schematics, maintenance records, test plans, and equipment support documentation.
- Collaborate with scientific and engineering staff to support experimental setups, system modifications, testing, and successful execution of project goals.
- Serve as a technical lead for assigned laser system activities, applying established guidelines, techniques, and procedures to solve complex problems.
- Lead, train, and mentor other technical staff as needed.
- Utilize advanced data methods and perform in-depth analysis of system and experimental data…
