Information Technology Technician

City of Livermore | Livermore, California, United States

Responsibilities
  • Install, configure, troubleshoot, and maintain computer and telephone hardware, software, and data/voice communication equipment.
  • Load, tune, configure, and upgrade operating systems.
  • Diagnose and resolve computer problems, and analyze end‑user requirements to recommend appropriate solutions.
  • Assist in maintaining and administering local area networks and provide support for Internet services.
  • Customize and enhance computer software, evaluate system performance, and report findings to management.
  • Perform preventive maintenance of equipment, follow scheduled system activities, and process application and system jobs.
  • Maintain accurate, up‑to‑date documentation and inventory of hardware and software.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing with all users and vendors.
  • Work independently, set priorities, organize work, and meet deadlines under pressure.
  • Provide technical assistance to users and perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge: Principles of computer systems design, Windows operating system, diagnostic hardware utilities, application software packages, local area networks, data communications protocols, telephone hardware, PBX and voicemail configuration, and customer service principles.
  • Skills: Troubleshoot hardware and software problems; install and configure hardware, software, and data/voice communication equipment; develop effective relationships with users and vendors; work independently; set priorities; organize work; communicate orally and in writing; accommodate interruptions; meet deadlines; maintain accurate records; learn new computer tasks; and demonstrate an enthusiastic customer service attitude.
  • Abilities: Work effectively as part of a city‑wide team; develop and maintain effective relationships with users and vendors; identify opportunities for improving service, systems, and procedures; work with and maintain confidentiality; and learn city‑specific computer tasks and procedures.
  • Experience: Two years of experience installing, setting up, troubleshooting, and maintaining computers and peripheral equipment. Network support experience is desirable.
  • Education: Associate degree in information technology, computer science, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Training: Recent academic courses and certification programs relevant to this classification.
  • License: Valid California Driver’s License and satisfactory driving record.
  • Other Requirements: Willingness to work scheduled and emergency overtime; availability for on‑call assignments; ability to change work periods and days; and attendance at required meetings and training.
