Job Description

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher with a strong background in spectroscopic analysis to conduct research on the fundamental properties underpinning the initiation and growth of corrosion at metal surfaces. You will design and perform advanced analytical experiments to understand corrosion mechanisms in environmental conditions.
This position will support a multi-disciplinary team developing corrosion models and will report to the Chemistry of Nuclear Materials Group of the Materials Science Division in the Physical and Life Sciences Directorate.

In this role you will
  • Perform fundamental and applied experimental work in the field of surface science.
  • Participate in understanding the fundamental surface and interface properties of corrosion using state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation and techniques.
  • Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design, and execution of research to address complex problems.
  • Pursue independent but complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
  • Collaborate with scientists in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
  • Document and publish research in peer-reviewed journals and participate in domestic and international conferences. Perform all assignments in accordance with ES&H, security, and business practice requirements and policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, or closely related field.
  • Experience with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy, or similar spectroscopic techniques.
  • Experience combining multi-instrument data sets (e.g., XRD, IR, SEM) to interpret complex research samples.
  • Experience with theory and modeling of surface chemical reaction mechanisms and kinetics.
  • Ability as an innovative experimentalist with a broad range of experience in experimental design, techniques, and execution.
  • Experience performing self-directed research, presenting talks at conferences and a record of publishing results in established scientific journals.
  • Proficient written, verbal, and organizational skills necessary to effectively collaborate within small and large work groups.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with a diverse set of scientists, engineers, and other technical and administrative staff.
Qualifications we desire
  • Experience applying other surface science techniques (e.g., ToF-SIMS).
  • Experience with complex analysis of actinide compounds.
  • Experience with responses of materials in extreme environments, which can include irradiation, pressure, corrosion, or non-ambient temperatures.
