Overview
The Head of Stage Deputy Technical Manager will assist in leading the Technical Team at the Liverpool Empire, reporting to the Technical & Building Manager. The role involves ensuring the venue’s stage and building presentation standards are exemplary, overseeing stage infrastructure and production-related technical operations.
Responsibilities- Assist the Technical Manager with the implementation and monitoring of procedures and facilities in accordance with legislation and ATG Entertainment policies.
- Lead on all stage matters relating to visiting productions, ensuring a robust, cost‑effective plan is in place for all visiting productions.
- Ensure the smooth running of fit‑ups, get‑outs and shows, and act as duty technician for fire alarm activations and investigative tasks.
- Schedule technical staff to meet the operational needs of the Liverpool Empire and manage timesheets for all casual staff weekly.
- Communicate with visiting productions, coordinating technical needs, staffing and safety information; disseminate production information to all affected parties.
- Generate costings for incoming production companies and arrange hire kit, additional outside crew, runners or catering assistants when required.
- Maintain safe, tidy and efficient use of all storage areas and promote good housekeeping within the technical department.
- Deputise for the Technical Manager in their absence, including attending senior management and health & safety meetings.
- Track and log venue inspections, services and maintenance visits; schedule contractor visits around theatre commitments.
- Take ownership of tracking digital compliance system actions and monthly workplace inspections.
- Manage and monitor the performance of outside contractors, ensuring work is carried out to the highest standards and in line with health & safety requirements.
- Maintain prioritised lists of projects and requirements for inclusion in the theatre’s 5‑year capital expenditure plans.
- Plan and execute in‑house refurbishment and installation projects within venue budget and staffing constraints.
- Create, review and revise risk assessments, safe working practices, COSHH assessments and rescue plans on a regular basis.
- Implement and comply with the company’s health & safety policy and risk management system; support staff training on H&S matters.
- Assist with ensuring productions provide CDM/risk assessment detail; ensure venue policies are adhered to throughout their visit.
- Undertake training courses as required for the theatre’s needs and personal development.
- Recruit, train, appraise and manage teams to achieve business and departmental objectives.
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with trade union members of the technical team.
- Work at other ATG venues, undertake reasonable duties and training; be a key holder for building call‑out lists in emergencies.
- Previous senior level experience within a technical department in a large‑scale theatre or similar.
- Proven hands‑on technical theatre experience and knowledge.
- Experience coordinating fit‑ups.
- Experience of counterweight flying systems.
- Entertainment rigging experience.
- Experienced in implementing safe systems of work and developing a safety culture.
- Experienced in risk assessment writing and review.
- Production carpentry experience in a theatre environment.
- Manual handling experience.
- Working at height experience.
- Computer literate.
- Familiarity with digital compliance systems.
- Recognised health and safety at work certification.
- Experience of delivering training.
- Experience in scenic construction techniques.
- Experience in production or project management.
- Stakeholder management – working with producers and clients.
- Large‑scale touring experience.
- First Aid and/or Mental Health First Aid training.
- Experience with Office
365. - Experience in delivering staff training.
