About this job

We are pleased to invite applications for a prestigious Advanced Pancreatobiliary (PB) Endoscopy Fellowship based at the Royal hospital site of the University Hospital Liverpool Group (UHLG). This is a unique opportunity to join one of the UK’s leading tertiary centres within a state‑of‑the‑art endoscopy unit, co‑located with the Mersey School of Endoscopy – a National Endoscopy Training Centre – and the Directorate of Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

The post is structured to provide intensive hands‑on tertiary level training in a wide range of PB endoscopy (ERCP, EUS diagnostic and therapeutic, and endoscopic necrosectomy) at the new Royal hospital build. The fellowship supports endoscopists developing subspecialist HPB endoscopy skills under supervision of nationally recognised experts.

The fellow will work under the supervision of the endoscopic pancreatobiliary team comprising three Consultant Endoscopists (Dr Khoon Sheng Kok, Dr Sanchoy Sarkar, Dr Jonathan Evans), a Consultant Hepatologist (Dr Edward Britton) and training leads (Dr Joseph Fiske, Dr Douglas Penman). The exceptional pancreatic unit, part of the Royal site, performs 150‑200 major pancreatic resections per annum and regularly sees over 200 external referrals for acute pancreatitis and its complications.

The role offers opportunity to learn from and interact with a proactive, world‑renowned team of experts, and potential to develop research into pancreatic pathology.

Multidisciplinary Team Meetings

The fellow will be a key participant in:

  • Weekly Malignant Pancreas MDT
  • Weekly HPB Endo‑therapy MDT
  • Weekly Benign Pancreas MDT – active engagement in case discussions, decision‑making, and service planning is expected.
Research and Teaching

The fellow will be expected to actively involve in research within PB endoscopy and medicine, presenting at national/international meetings and publishing.

The fellow will also participate in national HPB courses and the nurses’ pancreatobiliary course (ENRICH). Potential to set up hands‑on training courses in the future.

The successful candidate will join the gastroenterology registrar on‑call rota, providing out‑of‑hours advice and emergency endoscopy provision. At a tertiary centre this includes receiving referrals from external hospitals for transfer for intervention inclusive of interventional radiology involvement. Emergency out‑of‑hours endoscopy is undertaken in theatre. Weekends and bank holidays on‑call will involve inpatient ward rounds for hepatology and luminal gastroenterology patients and seeing routine referrals.

On‑calls are supported by an on‑call consultant 24/7, and weekend/bank holiday rounds by a ward consultant.
