Overview

This combined Acute Medicine (AMU) and Respiratory Medicine consultant post at Royal Liverpool Hospital strengthens links between the departments and enhances patient care by providing specialist respiratory support within the AMU. The role supports the expansion of ambulatory care services and the development of new pathways for patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead consultant care to all AMU patients from admission to discharge, including participation in four morning ward rounds daily and provision of urgent medical opinions.
  • Supervise junior medical staff and deliver educational activities for trainees.
  • Coordinate the discharge process, including electronic discharge summaries for patients sent home directly from AMU.
  • Provide senior medical input on AMU admissions from ED and GP referrals, ensuring appropriate triage and referral.
  • Lead day‑to‑day clinical management of the AMU, working alongside senior nurses and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Contribute to weekend and holiday cover for the AMU and respiratory specialties, with an on‑call commitment of approximately 1 in 9.
  • Develop ambulatory care services within the AMU, including at least one urgent care and discharge follow‑up session per week to prevent unnecessary admissions.
  • Deliver bronchoscopy lists, general respiratory and pleural clinics during off‑ward weeks.
  • Manage complex respiratory patients and support the newly developed NIV unit, including oversight of pleural procedures.
  • Collaborate with specialist services such as Severe Asthma, Pleural Disease, ILD, Pulmonary Infection, and Lung Cancer (EBUS @ LHCH).
  • Engage in audit, audit‑based research and teaching within Respiratory Medicine.
  • Supervisor clinical mentor for one or more trainees, contributing to multidisciplinary teaching sessions.
  • Actively support the hospital at home service and other community respiratory initiatives.
Qualifications & Experience
  • MB ChB or equivalent, full GMC registration.
  • MRCP (UK) and CCT in Respiratory Medicine and General Internal Medicine (or within 6 months).
  • Evidence of audit/research within team structure.
  • Demonstrated teaching skills and experience of assessment.
  • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at the time of appointment.
Desirable Criteria
  • CCT in Acute Medicine.
  • Membership of the Society of Acute Medicine.
  • Additional post‑graduate qualifications.
