The job plan is structured to provide intensive hands‑on tertiary level training in a wide range of PB endoscopy (ERCP, EUS (diagnostic and therapeutic) and endoscopic necrosectomy) at the new Royal hospital build. The fellowship is designed to support endoscopists in developing subspecialist HPB endoscopy skills under the supervision of nationally recognised experts. The Fellow would be working under the supervision of the endoscopic pancreatobiliary team, comprising of 3 Consultant Endoscopists (Dr Khoon Sheng Kok, Dr Sanchoy Sarkar and Dr Jonathan Evans), 1 Consultant Hepatologist (Dr Edward Britton), supported by training leads (Dr Joseph Fiske and Dr Douglas Penman).
Responsibilities- Key participant in multidisciplinary team meetings:
Weekly Malignant Pancreas MDT, Weekly HPB Endo‑therapy MDT, Weekly Benign Pancreas MDT. - Active engagement in case discussions, decision‑making, and service planning.
- Involved in research within PB endoscopy and medicine, presenting at national/international meetings and publishing.
- Involvement in national HPB courses and the nurses' pancreatobiliary course (ENRICH); potential to set up hands‑on training courses.
- On‑call duties on the gastroenterology registrar rota, providing out‑of‑hours advice, emergency endoscopy in theatre, and inpatient ward rounds for hepatology and luminal gastroenterology patients during weekends and bank holidays.
- Supported by an on‑call Consultant 24/7 and a ward consultant on call during weekends/bank holidays.
- Primary Medical Qualification (MBBS or equivalent)
- Full registration with GMC
- MRCP (UK) or equivalent
- Post‑CCT or nearing completion of training
- Independent in OGD and Colonoscopy (JAG Criteria)
- Independent in endoscopic management of Upper GI bleeds and basic therapeutic endoscopy
- At least 1 year experience in ERCP
- Understanding of principles of Research and Audit
- Higher degree (Masters or MD)
- Evidence of audit in relevant field
- Evidence of presentations in relevant field
- Evidence of publications in relevant field
- Experience with EUS
- Completion of JAG Basic Skills and/or Train the Trainer (TET) courses
- You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
The Merseyside and Cheshire Regional Pancreatic Cancer Unit is based at the Royal site of the UHLG. It is one of the busiest and highest performing pancreatic centres in the UK, with around 150‑200 major pancreatic resections performed per annum for both cancer and benign disease. The Royal site is a specialist referral centre for acute pancreatitis and its complications and receives over 200 external referrals for such patients each year.
There is a very high level of cooperation between the interventional endoscopy team, surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, research and nursing staff that enable timely interventions.
There is an increasing use of endoscopic ultrasound for both diagnostic and therapeutic indications. The candidate will be able to learn from and interact with a very proactive, world‑renowned team of experts. There is also potential to develop ideas for treatment and research into pancreatic pathology.
