Job summary

This is a Locum 10 PA post based at Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust to join a specialist team of Consultant Paediatric Haematologists and Consultant Paediatric Oncologists. Applicants able to work full‑time are eligible. The post holder reports to the Clinical Lead and Chief Executive with support from the Divisional Director. A recruitment and retention premium applies.

Main duties of the post

The post is envisaged as 10 programmed activities per week: 8.5 direct clinical care and 1.4 supporting professional activities. The post holder delivers clinical and laboratory haematology, negotiates specialist leads, provides consultant medical input to the clinical laboratory, and participates in on‑call rotations (1:4 for non‑malignant and laboratory haematology; 1:7 for haemato‑oncology unit cover).

Job responsibilities
  • Attend Haematology MDT weekly
  • Attend Haemato‑Oncology Unit communication meeting weekly
  • Attend Leukaemia MDT weekly
  • Attend Chemotherapy planning meeting weekly
  • Attend Risk & Governance meetings for Laboratory Medicine and clinical specialties appropriate
  • Attend Laboratory Medicine Interdepartmental meetings monthly
  • Attend Pathology Users Group quarterly

The post holder reports through the Specialty Clinical Director for Medicine to the Chief Executive. Clinical appraisal undertaken by a suitably senior consultant.

Teaching & Academic role

The holder supervises junior staff, participates in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and is encouraged to develop research interests.

Managerial responsibilities

Participates in departmental meetings related to strategic planning, takes an active role in service review and development.

CPD, Audit & Clinical Governance

The holder participates in CPD activity, undertakes appropriate audits, and contributes to the clinical governance programme. Study leave budget available.

Person Specification – Education and Training
  • Primary medical degree
  • MRCPCH or MRCP or equivalent postgraduate qualification
  • Full GMC registration with licence to practice
Desirable
  • Higher Degree e.g. MSc
  • DCH, DCCH, MBA or other relevant diplomas
