We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated and ambitious individual to join two well-integrated Interventional Radiology (IR) teams as part of a nationally supported Interventional Oncology (IO) fellowship. Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are pleased to announce a collaborative Interventional Oncology UK (IOUK) Fellowship organised by IOUK and funded in partnership with industry.
This is a one-year, post-CCT fellowship rotating equally between the two trusts.
- First six months at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (LUHFT), under the mentorship of Dr Tze Chan
- Second six months at The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, under the mentorship of Dr Peter Littler
This fellowship provides an outstanding opportunity to consolidate existing IR competencies while gaining advanced training in some of the most complex and cutting-edge IO techniques currently available in the UK.
The Fellow will gain hands‑on experience in established Interventional Oncology procedures, including:
- Liver ablation
- Renal ablation
- Lung ablation
- Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT)
- Transarterial Chemo embolisation (TACE)
- Portal Vein Embolisation / Dual vein embolisation (PVE)
Exposure to emerging and advanced techniques, such as Irreversible Electroporation (IRE) and Electrochemotherapy (ECT), will be provided where available.
Dedicated sessions will also be included to maintain core IR and IO skills in preparation for a future consultant appointment.
There will be no compulsory on‑call commitment
, allowing protected time for academic development. The Fellow will be expected to complete a research project suitable for submission to an international meeting, with mandatory presentation at IOUK.

The stated aim of this fellowship is to expand access to Interventional Oncology services across the UK. Applicants who demonstrate a credible and realistic plan to implement or expand IO services following completion of the fellowship will be given additional weighting during selection.
In addition to the clinical challenges of the role, the fellowship offers strong support for teaching, education, research, and audit.
Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (LUHFT)LUHFT provides an extensive portfolio of vascular and oncological interventions delivered across four IR theatres on two sites and an IR CT intervention suite equipped with Siemens Artis Zee, Artis Pheno and Siemens Somatom Definition Edge systems. LUHFT is one of the largest TACE centres in the UK and provides access to all currently approved ablation technologies, including microwave ablation, IRE, and cryoablation.
TheNewcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (NFT)
NFT provides an extensive portfolio of vascular and oncological interventions delivered across four IR theatres and a CT suite for ablations on two sites. NFT is a liver transplant centre, a tertiary referral centre and the largest SIRT centre for HCC in the UK. Both NFT and LUHFT are tertiary referral centres for numerous IO procedures e.g.:
- Liver tumour ablation
- Renal tumour ablation
- Lung tumour ablation
- SIRT (Y90)
- Portal vein embolization / Double vein embolisation
- TACE
Diagnostic radiology skills will be maintained through dedicated reporting sessions relevant to vascular and oncological practice. The Fellow will be directly supervised throughout the fellowship, with a clear emphasis on developing safe, independent practice.
