Introduction:
Applications are invited for a locum consultant ophthalmologist post specialising in glaucoma. The successful candidate will join an established prestigious tertiary service and will also provide general and emergency ophthalmic services.

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual with appropriate training and qualifications.

This is a 5.00 PA appointment for up to two years covering a career break.

The post is based at the Aintree University Hospital site, which is part of the Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (LUHFT). St Paul’s Eye Unit is a vibrant and innovative department. The successful applicant will join a group of over thirty consultants including five clinical academics at consultant level.

St Paul’s Eye Unit is a part of the Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, a merger between the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen Trust and the Aintree Trust. St Paul’s is located on three sites:
Aintree University Hospital, Royal Liverpool University Hospital and South Liverpool Treatment Centre, Garston.

Senior medical staff currently comprises almost thirty substantive consultants including five clinical academics at consultant level, locum consultants, two associate specialists and six specialty doctors. Doctors in training comprise two clinical lecturers, specialist trainees and sub‑specialty fellows. Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust comprises Aintree University Hospital, Broadgreen Hospital & Royal Liverpool University Hospital. We are part of NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group, formed on 1 Nov 2024 from the coming together of LUHFT and Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust.

Attainments and practical skills:
Fellowship training or equivalent postgraduate training / experience in the management of patients with glaucoma. Surgical or non‑surgical skills not currently offered by the department. Evidence of leadership skills.

    Medical degree; FRCOphth (or equivalent). CST in ophthalmology. Specialist registration with the GMC. Post‑graduate research degree (MD, PhD, MSc). Research Publications and/or presentations of original clinical and/or laboratory research in ophthalmology and glaucoma. Research grant awards.
  • Disposition:
    Able to work with team members of all grades within the NHS. Organisational skills. Willingness to work flexibly towards the strategic aims of the organisation. Managerial experience including a central role in competence based role development for non‑medical staff and a central role in patient‑care pathway development.
  • Teaching and Training Experience in formal and informal teaching and training. Qualification in teaching or training.
  • Audit:
    Clinical audit experience. Evidence of completion of a clinical audit cycle.
