Reading Helper – Volunteer Role

Reading Helper is an adult‑volunteer position available to individuals living or working within a 5‑mile radius of a participating primary school. Volunteers commit to at least one afternoon per week throughout the term for a full year, creating a relaxed environment that encourages children to discover the joy of reading.

• Create a comfortable, child‑led reading session that supports children to choose books and enjoy reading.
• Support each child in maintaining their own pace, listening actively, and making reading a positive experience.
• Build trusting relationships that extend beyond individual sessions, fostering time, connection and joy for the children.
• Maintain a flexible schedule and collaborate with school staff as required.

• Adult volunteer residing within a 5‑mile radius of the school.
• Commitment to a minimum of one afternoon per week for one academic year.
• Passion for supporting children’s literacy and ability to engage them in a relaxed setting.
• No previous experience required; training will be provided.

• One‑to‑one, in‑person reading support training.
• Ongoing support and guidance from experienced volunteers and staff.
• An opportunity to contribute to the community and witness lasting positive impacts on children’s reading skills and confidence.

These volunteer opportunities are part of the Coram Beanstalk charity, which trains and supports community volunteers to bring children the benefits of time, connection and joy through reading.
