The RoleThe focus of the Membership Development Officer (MDO) role is to provide support and guidance to aspiring and current members of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) in the London and South East area. This involves meeting potential members in groups or individually (face-to-face and online) and explaining the various routes to help them get professionally qualified at the appropriate level.
Current members may need advice on progressing their professional qualifications. The role includes the opportunity to interface with a broad spectrum of Civil Engineering related employer organisations and educational establishments. The role will predominately be supporting aspiring and current members based in the London Region, but also extending to counties immediately outside depending on home location London.
- Develop and deliver initiatives to attract and retain a diverse range of members, including technicians and apprentices.
- Promote ICE membership through targeted outreach activities and events.
- Provide one-to-one and group support—both online and in person—to individuals at various stages of their professional qualification journey.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with employers, advising them on professional development and mentoring opportunities.
- Engage with colleges and universities to inspire and support the next generation of civil engineers.
- Collaborate closely with fellow Membership Development Officers to ensure a consistent and high-quality approach across the team.
- Maintain accurate records in ICE’s membership databases.
- Educated to degree level or with equivalent experience in civil engineering, professional development, or training. A professional qualification (Eng Tech, IEng, or CEng) is desirable but not essential.
- Strong communicator with excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills—comfortable engaging with audiences ranging from students to senior professionals.
- Technically proficient in MS Office and able to translate technical information into accessible, engaging content.
- Flexible, with a willingness to travel and work occasional evenings. A full UK driving licence and access to a car are required (car allowance provided).
