Healthcare Assistant - Gastroenterology 4A

We are looking for a motivated, trustworthy and reliable individual to join our hardworking and dynamic team on Ward 4A, a busy mixed medical ward specialised in liver disease. The role requires good basic communication skills and a willingness to assist patients with all aspects of daily living and basic nursing care. Working shifts include weekends and nights as required.
Responsibilities- Support all individuals through effective communication.
- General bed making and making up of clean beds in readiness for new admissions and operation beds (refer to policy).
- Clear and clean vacated bed spaces and prepare them for use according to ward/unit protocol.
- Prepare used linen bags for collection by Porters and ensure adequate supply of linen bags/skips ready for use.
- Assist in maintaining a clean and safe environment in all areas.
- Collect blood products as required from laboratory.
- Safely dispose of clinical waste and sharps as per Trust policy.
- Be familiar with Trust policy and procedure for reporting clinical incidents and report incidents when they occur.
- Provide support and assistance to new and junior members of staff.
- Support members of the nursing team in managing abusive and aggressive behaviour with supervision.
- Contribute to the health, safety and security of individuals.
- Assist patients in meeting their hygiene needs and carry out all aspects of personal care and grooming (including emptying catheter bags).
- Provide patients with toileting support, ensuring privacy and dignity is maintained.
- Support patients in managing incontinence.
- Measure patients’ fluid intake and output using fluid balance charts and report information to the registered nurse.
- Prepare and serve patients’ meals, drinks and snacks, and assist/ feed patients as necessary.
- Assist patients in completing menu forms and liaise with the catering department regarding meal requirements.
- Report patients’ dietary intake as indicated in the patient plan of care.
- Carry out movement and handling within safe practice guidelines from mandatory training and related to the patient’s manual handling plan.
- Enable patients to maintain or improve mobility by using exercise and mobility appliances as directed by individual care plans.
- Assist in the prevention of pressure sore development as directed by the registered nurse and in conjunction with the patient’s plan of care.
- Obtain specimens from patients for ward or laboratory testing.
- Escort patients to clinical departments within the hospital.
- Assist the registered nurse in performing last offices.
- Make general observations of patients, reporting any untoward events to registered nursing staff.
- Initiate basic life support techniques as appropriate and provide assistance to the registered nurse in prolonged resuscitation situations.
- Ensure due regard is given to customs, values and spiritual beliefs of patients and carers.
