Job PurposeThe post-holder will deliver and contribute to the development of the maternal medicine service, working both as an autonomous practitioner and team member, delivering high quality, expert nursing care.
Main Duties and Responsibilities- Be a key member of the maternal medicine MDT and work collaboratively with the rest of the maternity team to support best possible patient outcomes.
- Participate in joint specialist maternal medicine clinics, providing key nursing input. Supporting the other members of the clinical team and ensuring the team are working to agreed guidelines and protocols within a clinical governance framework.
- Assisting in the acceptance of referrals to the Maternal Medicine Portal, including determining their appropriateness and assisting in the prioritisation of referrals according to clinical need.
- Providing a nursing outreach role in both the inpatient and outpatient clinical settings. This will include assistance in carrying out specific investigations, treatments and interventions without direct supervision:
- Investigations (e.g. bloods, blood cultures, ECG, ABG)
- Management of peripheral and central lines
- Administration of medications (e.g. immunoglobulin infusions)
- Assisting in the management of the acutely unwell patient including the provision of enhanced nursing care.
- Providing outreach support to pregnant women admitted to our acute gynaecology ward and across Liverpool Adult Acute and Specialist Providers (LAASP) comprising Aintree, Royal, Liverpool, Liverpool Hearth and Chest/Broadgreen, Walton Centre and Clatterbridge Cancer Centre as part of the maternal medicine team.
- Participating in maternal medicine ward rounds of both inpatients at Liverpool Women’s University Hospital and outreach patients at our local acute provider trusts (who are part of LAASP).
- Requesting diagnostic tests as appropriate within an agreed sphere of competence.
- Interpret results and develop programmes of care as appropriate.
- Provide telephone advisory service to patients within an agreed boundary of competence.
- Provide psychological support at diagnosis and throughout the patient journey, acting as the patient’s advocate.
- Proactively and independently refer patients to other disciplines when relevant, in accordance with local protocols and national guidelines.
- Contribute formally and informally to education, training and development of midwifery, nursing and other professional groups. A key focus will be increasing staff knowledge of maternal medicine.
