We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Phlebotomist to step up into the role of a Senior Phlebotomist at University Hospitals of Liverpool Group. This is an interesting and highly skilled post, requiring the ability to work under pressure, delegate tasks, rota management and sickness monitoring. The individual will also have an opportunity to provide training in venepuncture. The successful candidate will be the first port of call for both patients and staff with queries, comments, and complaints, escalating to the line manager when required.
You will work closely with the line manager to ensure all sites are covered during operating hours, and some cross site cover will be required as part of training and service delivery needs. You will also be expected to perform weekly stock takes and order any required stock. Good computer skills, excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills will be expected.
You will report directly to the Phlebotomy Services Manager, escalating any issues as required. To help facilitate your own training and development, it will be expected that you attend any Trust training courses deemed appropriate to your job role.
Main Duties of the Job- Look after day to day running of services across multiple sites and ward services, ensuring all areas are staffed adequately.
- Approve/deny annual leave as requested and monitor sickness.
- Perform return to work discussions with those returning from sickness and escalating any sickness queries to the line manager.
- Create and maintain rotas across both sites and the ward service, including break allocation.
- Provide high‑skill venepuncture, assist colleagues with challenging bleeds and offer further training to staff within the Trust.
- Provide cover for Phlebotomy Services wherever delivery needs are required.
- Monitor training and development in the department, ensuring staff have off‑rota time to complete mandatory training.
- Work alongside colleagues across all areas where Phlebotomy support is provided, performing venepuncture, offering support and help to colleagues and patients, taking questions and directing queries where necessary.
Job Description And Main Responsibilities

- Amending/updating the job plan when issues with rotas occur, reallocating staff to maintain efficient service.
- Processing weekly staff rotas, recording holidays and sickness.
- Be aware of and propose changes to practice policy, providing feedback to implement any required changes.
- Train new starters in phlebotomy, customer care, medical students in phlebotomy technique and blood tube use.
- Record phlebotomy activity daily, i.e. amount of blood taken and number of patients.
- Collect daily numbers for department, wards, clinics and occasional rosters, maintaining a paper‑based filing system (facts and figures).
- Deal with staff and patient complaints.
- Deal with patients presenting without documentation, contact GP surgery to confirm tests required and complete documentation accordingly.
- Interpret requests on forms, assess workload of particular areas, and allocate appropriate staff numbers.
- Interpreting blood forms, staff rotas, roster returns and collection of data.
- Selection of venepuncture sites.
- Assembling monovette system, aseptic technique.
- Know the most suitable sites for venepuncture, including advanced sites, and correctly use blood tubes and understand why they are used.
- Demonstrable experience in Phlebotomy.
- NVQ 3 or equivalent in relevant area of knowledge.
