An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist to join our Inpatient Adult Speech and Language Therapy Team.

The successful candidate will be part of an innovative team managing complex dysphagia and communication inpatient caseloads. We cover many different medical specialities including Frailty, A&E, Gastroenterology, Infectious Diseases, Respiratory & Critical Care. This opportunity is also open to experienced Band 5s who are keen to develop into a band 6 role via a training route.

We are committed to continuing professional development through monthly CPD team events, peer supervision, attendance and presentation at internal and national courses.

Responsibilities
  • Provide a specialist Speech & Language Therapy service to patients with acquired dysphagia and communication disorders in acute settings.
  • Be an active member of the multidisciplinary teams to ensure the best patient outcomes.
  • Support and supervise Band 5 and assistant staff, and deputise for clinical team leads.
  • Participate in internal and external projects to support service development.
  • Use videofluoroscopy and FEES services wherever appropriate.
  • Collaborate with the feeding issues MDT, learning disability team, and dementia team to provide holistic patient care.
  • Represent SLT in multi‑professional working groups such as oral care, nutrition and hydration, communication and tracheostomy.
  • Contribute to audit, research and service improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
  • BSc/MSc Graduate
  • Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCP)
  • Member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT)
  • Postgraduate professional qualification
  • Attendance at regular SIG meetings in areas of clinical interest
Experience
  • Post‑qualification experience working with adult acquired disorders
  • Experience in a multidisciplinary environment
  • Experience running adult groups
  • Ability to work with assistants
  • Videofluoroscopy assessments with senior supervision
  • Experience working with voluntary agencies
  • Teaching/training others
  • Involvement in audit or clinical research
  • Involvement in the clinical supervision process
  • Experience of taking SLT observation students
Knowledge
  • Sound dysphagia skills – able to work independently
  • Understanding of current NHS issues
  • Evidence of attendance at external courses to develop knowledge in specialised clinical areas
Skills
  • Excellent knowledge and skills in therapeutic and functional approaches to communication disorders
  • Evidence of developing clinical reasoning and problem‑solving skills
  • Ability to evaluate the effectiveness of clinical intervention
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills – observation, listening and empathy
  • Ability to organise own caseload effectively
  • Basic IT skills
  • Excellent written and verbal skills
