We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Substance Misuse Nurse to join our team at HMP Altcourse, a category B prison located in the Fazakerley area of Liverpool. HMP Altcourse is the busiest remand prison in the country, so there is always something happening in this varied role and no two days are the same. The position is for a registered nurse in adult or mental health who has experience in substance misuse and will work as part of a team of nine.
Hours- Monday – Sunday service
- 37.5 hours per week
- Various shift patterns – 7:00‑8:00 pm, 8:00‑9:00 pm, 9:00‑10:00 pm
- Nights 7:45 pm–7:15 am
- 1 weekend in 3
- 2‑month rota
This full‑time position offers an annual salary up to £43,609 – £49,175, depending on experience.

- Work as part of a multidisciplinary team, prioritising patient care to develop individualised packages of care through comprehensive assessment and recovery planning.
- Deliver a range of treatment options, including clinical and psychosocial interventions in both group and 1‑1 settings, with recovery at the centre of our health‑wellbeing model.
- Carry out comprehensive assessments, initiate and review individual recovery plans and confidently communicate the full range of treatment options available to service users.
- Monitor therapeutic responses to medication and potential side effects and liaise with prescribers; work with individuals on a 1‑1 basis, providing advice and information.
- Support group work delivery and liaise with prescribers and Recovery Practitioners on clinical interventions; occasionally support dispensing.

- Registered nurse with current NMC Adult / Mental Health registration.
- Evidence of continued professional development (CPD).
- RCGP1 in Substance Misuse or willingness to undertake.
- Experience of working with opiate‑dependent patients.
- Sound clinical substance‑misuse knowledge.
- A non‑judgemental and compassionate approach.
Although not essential, ideal applicants would have experience in a hospital, community or prison environment.
