Job Overview

This post is a 6‑month secondment / Fixed Term development opportunity for the successful applicant to enhance their skills within cancer care as part of the Acute Oncology Team in LUHFT.

As the successful candidate you will assess patients within the acute cancer setting and develop knowledge of patients with all types of solid tumours. You will be part of a proactive team and work alongside colleagues across LUHFT and partner services such as CCC, palliative care, ED, Acute Medicine, radiology and pathology to maximise quality of patient care.

Main Duties of the Job Clinical Responsibilities
  • Perform comprehensive assessment of patient nursing needs, plan, implement and evaluate care delivery according to changing health care needs.
  • Perform advanced clinical skills in assessment, diagnosis or treatment where competent.
  • Collect, collate, evaluate and report information, maintaining accurate patient records.
  • Involve patients and carers/relatives in the planning and delivery of care and development of services.
  • Monitor investigation results, initiating further assessment/review of treatment pathway as required.
  • Work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies to ensure patient needs are met, especially in relation to ongoing care needs and discharge arrangements.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication with patients, carers/relatives and professionals across health and social services.

Job Description and Main Responsibilities In Acute Areas Across The Trust
  • Provide support and advice for patients admitted acutely unwell with cancer treatment–related symptoms or complications from a previous cancer.
  • Provide teaching and update sessions regarding oncology, chemotherapy and side effects.
  • Act as a liaison service to ensure patients are referred to the most appropriate area (Palliative Care, Oncology, Haematology and other cancer‑specific areas).
  • Assist in reducing inappropriate oncology admissions and overall length of stay.
Inpatient Areas Across The Trust
  • Provide support and advice for clinical teams for patients admitted acutely unwell with toxicities of cancer‑related treatment, progression of cancer or newly diagnosed cancers.
  • Provide teaching and update sessions regarding oncology, chemotherapy and side effects.
Ensuring Your Own Skills and Knowledge of Cancer Care Are Up To Date
  • Provide a liaison service to support teams to ensure patients are referred to the most appropriate area, e.g. Palliative Care, Oncology, Haematology and other cancer‑specific areas.
  • Assist in reducing inappropriate oncology admissions and length of stay across the trust.
  • Provide an advice and liaison service for oncology patients; patients remain under the admitting team whilst inpatient with support from the Acute Oncology Team.
